for trading away Kyle Bradish in a deal for Dylan Bundy.

He just threw 8.2 scoreless innings against Houston tonight after throwing 8 scoreless innings in Houston last month.

In 2022: 21 GS, 110.1 IP, 4.65 ERA, 4.30 FIP

Since coming off the IL on 7/29: 10 GS, 55.1 IP, 3.09 ERA, 3.78 FIP

And the eye test and stuff match the stats.

95 mph fastball with a slider, change, and curve to round out his arsenal.

Yep, Sandoval...and Ohtani and Detmers and Rengifo.

Right.  You win some, you lose some.  Even some of the PBOs/GMs who are widely viewed as the best in the game have lost trades.  The key is just to win more than you lose overall.

Bundy was really good for us that first year.

Eppler's shortcoming was the one year deals he signed guys to - his track record there was rather awful.

Had the directive to remain 'competitive'.   So you trade org capital to get to 80 wins instead of 77.   Sometime it doesn't hurt as bad when the players moved flame out but it's ultimately a waste of resources if you don't win enough games to make the playoffs or you don't eventually trade the player you received for someone useful in return.  See Andrelton Simmons etal.

Or because of the directive, everything you trade for typically has to an mlb ready or near ready player.  Decreasing the value of what you can get in return.  Billy was really quite terrible under that philosophy when it came to the major league club.  Small sample strength for guys below AA.  If he'd stuck with that from the beginning we'd have a much different looking org right now.

But instead, we got Bundy and Alex Meyer, and Ricky Nolasco and Kinsler and Maybin and Espinosa and Revere and Escobar and Upton etc.

The competitive rebuild on a limited budget is the ultimate farce in all of pro sports.  You are neither actually rebuilding appropriately nor remaining competitive.  They should call it what it really is.  A long, slow and painful partial rebuild while trying to keep the fans interested so revenues don't drop too much.

Thanks Arte.

This is a bad narrative. You know there are so many more variables involved in a final season win total than the few you mention here.

Ultimately, the GM is held responsible for the win total.

I recall just about everyone rejoicing when every GM was fired.

the only other variable that matters is injuries.  Yes, that can impact your overall win total dramatically.

But let's take the 2020 shortened season as a good example of what I'm talking about.

Everyone was mostly healthy.  Except for Ohtani not being able to pitch but they knew that going in.

How competitive was that team?  A .433 winning pct.  Which equates to a 92 loss season.

And that was Bundy's good year.  A 2.1 WAR year in 60 games.  Which equates to a 5.5 WAR season.

So sorry, I understated my previous estimate.  Trading for him got us to 70 wins instead of 65.

It's a GM's job to understand the variance and potential downside of how a player might perform.

Is it bad luck that we sucked this year because Walsh and Stassi and Adell and Rendon and Marsh and Fletcher weren't good?  Or that Loup and Tepera and Iglesias and most of the rest of the bullpen haven't performed well?  Is it bad luck that guys like Wade and Velazquez and all the other offensively challenged replacements from the scrap heap helped to combine for one of the worst performances for 5-9 in the order over the last 20+ years even including the NL over that time who had a pitcher in there up until this year?

My overall point is that regardless of any variable, this team just hasn't been good enough to justify spending org capital on any trade for a player with limited control over the last seven years during which time they've had an avg winning pct that equates to 75-87.  Also over which time the lowest wild card winning pct was .562 so 91 wins.

That's a 16 games difference per year.
