New Pitching Coach-Jered Weaver(?)

I know it's fun to speculate about these things, but it's impossible to tell whether any of these guys would make a good coach or not. Success doesn't determine that.

Actually, it seems like a lot of the best coaches weren't anything special as players, if they played at all. Maddon never made it past A ball.

I think it's probably going to be Mike Butcher. They just haven't announced anything, obviously because Callaway remains the pitching coach until the investigation is concluded and a decision is made. But whoever the next pitching coach is, he's probably been doing his homework, studying these guys' deliveries, performances, talking with Maddon and Minasian is preparation for the role.

I hope Callaway sticks around, I truly do. I hope the investigation finds that these communications and relations were consensual, that he undergoes some sensitivity training and professional counseling, but is able to work through these issues and keep coaching Angels pitchers, because he's truly the best at what he does.

But I'm not anticipating that turn of events to unfold, though that would be great. So Maddon will get the gang back together and bring in Butcher.

Butcher is experienced. I don't know if he's necessarily good, but considering he'd be hired right before ST, he's a worthy replacement in the circumstances.

Agreed. I think the options are either 1: Butcher as pitching coach or 2: Wise promoted to pitching coach and someone else brought in/promoted for bullpen coach.

Let's get some fire in that dugout. J Weav.

Dude learned from Lackey about work ethic {before the Boston fried chicken party}. Dude stayed with the Halos when offered more $.

Halos need to dump Coach dickpick - and keep it homegrown. WEAV....

Thoughts:

Would just be nice to see him in Angels uniform again.

Good, because he has no qualifications to coach at the major league level.

Doug White had qualifications, where did that get us?

Meanwhile Harry Ralston (Bud) Black went from a playing career on the mound to a successful pitching coach & solid manager.

Jered Weaver is just as qualified as arguably the best pitching coach the Angels have ever had in Bud Black.

I’m pretty sure he was involved in a front office before he went into coaching.

Bud Black?  Dunno, not as a coach.  He was an assistant GM with them...  Maybe you're thinking of former Indian, Charles Nagy.   He was with the D-backs before the Angels.

Assistant GM with the Indians.  That’s what I thought but wasn’t positive.

The Indians named Black a special assistant for baseball operations to general manager John Hart for the 1996 and 1997 seasons, before naming him the pitching coach at Triple-A Buffalo for the 1998 season. Black returned to his special assistant role for the 1999 season.

@Blarg & @Stradling, Dave Duncan who is widely known as one of the best pitching coaches in the game would have been a better example.

After retiring as a player in March of 1977, Duncan began his coaching career with the Cleveland Indians in 1978.

Duncan was also the pitching coach of the Seattle Mariners, Chicago White Sox, Athletics, and St. Louis Cardinals.

Four pitchers he coached won the Cy Young Award in 1983, 1990, 1992, and 2005. He was also a member of four World Series champion teams in 1972, 1989, 2006, and 2011.

My point is, you can go from player to coach and be successful with little to no coaching experience.
