Fletcher is in no way close to Simmons defense at SS. And Simmons would still be better defensively three seasons from now than Fletcher.

The real question is Rengifo's value moving forward as to whether Simmons is offered a contract, not Fletcher's defense. Because if Rengifo can provide either SS or 2nd base coverage along with a reasonable enough replication of his AAA performance at the MLB level with the bat then Simmons defense only value is offset. Jones and Barreto are cost controlled infield depth which leaves all cash savings for pitching.

The real linchpin is Rengifo. If he can't step up the extending Simmons will be necessary.

I would have agreed with you a few months ago but damn fletcher makes plays

The pitching has been fine this year for once, and defense has been the problem. So let's go after pitching and let the GDPOAT walk?

Unless Barreto is Carlos Correa, you give Simmons a long-term deal. He should age better than most players, and is less of a risk than most players. Far less risky than a pitcher and far cheaper.

If he's worth x per year to any other team, he's worth >= x to the Angels. They don't have any other SSs. Or maybe I missed that Marsh switched positions.

Dude you’re terrible at this trolling thing. Please get better. No one gave a meaningful offer to Eppler at the trade deadline for Simmons. There’s zero and I do mean zero chance anyone gives Simmons a long term contract.

Simmons would resign with most teams, the Angels are not most teams and have way too much tied up in 3 players to even consider re-signing him.  Hopefully the Angels wise up and realize we are not in a normal position anymore and we cannot afford to spend on position players like we have in the past.  Not even mid-level position players.  Until Pujols and Upton are off the books we have to spend every red cent on pitching.

As long as you understand what that means for the next several years.

So Angel this is your plan

1st-Matt Thaiss (sink or swim)

2nd- Barreto/Rengifo (sink or swim)

SS- Fletcher

3rd- Rendon

C- Stassi/Bemboom (sink or swim)

LF- Upton/Marsh (sink or swim)

CF- Trout

RF- Adell

There’s three above average defensive players and one is the catcher when it’s Stassi

The Angels are in a position where they have to gamble, otherwise Arte better plan on going over the luxury tax.  Simmons is a luxury at this point, and he would do more harm than good taking up precious payroll space.  Berreto seems to be the last hope, Rengifo is lost and could never be found.

Simmons should return unless they plan on tanking in 2021.

If OhShit continues to suck in 2021 and Simmons doesn't return the team is gonna be relying on Trout, Rendon and Fletcher to score all the runs.

Maybe Adell has a ROY caliber season idk. The lineup looks like it will have alot of weak links next season with Pujols, Upton, Barretto, Rengifo being terrible

and even more if Ohtani doesn't rebound. Rengifo is terrible. Barretto will probably be too.
