I'm not entirely sure why the Padres would make that deal. They have so much pitching prospect depth in AA and AAA that's better than Jose Suarez. And for the Angels, Iour biggest issue has been a lack of quality SP depth, I'm just not sure why they'd trade one of their more promising pitching prospects.

no.

Yeah no way they move Suarez for Yates.

I do like the idea of getting Yates a lot but it should be Williams and another low-level prospect. Kirby only has about $10M in surplus value at best.

Padres will actually be a really interesting org for Angels fans to watch next couple days. Their 40-man is full, and they have several prospects they need to add prior to Tuesday to protect from the Rule 5 draft.

Jose Pirela:
Was a longtime Yankee prospect, will be making league-minimum in 2019, controlled through 2022. He also has an option remaining still.
Had a down year in 2018, but was fantastic in 2017. He's hit better away from Petco, and hit's lefties very well.
He has played 1B, 2B, LF, and RF, with one appearance at 3B, in last two years.

Austin Hedges:
Mejia is right behind him, and AA catcher Austin Allen is right behind Mejia, and needing to be added.
Might blossom with a change of scenery, and if not, still compares to what we had been getting with Maldonado.

Carlos Asuaje:
With Tatis and Urias pushing the bigs, Asuaje might get number crunched out. Has some versatility and an option remaining.
He hasn't done much in three MLB stints, but is only 27 in 2019, and has a .303/.377/.447/.824 AAA slash, with 86 XBH, 105 walks to 141 strikeouts in 243 G.

Christian Villanueva
Mostly 3B, saw a few innings all around the infield though. Solid defensively, cheap and controllable through '22.
Career slash of .341/.391/.738/1.129 vs. LHP in 61 G/138 PA with 16 HR
...and .605 OPS vs RHP (113 G/278 PA)

Bryan MitchellColin Rea and Walker Lockett are all fringey SP's who have struggled in the bigs but have shown promise in the minors.
Luis Perdomo finally got bumped back to AAA last year after continuing to regress in the bigs and posted good numbers.

And both Wil Myers and Hunter Renfroe make plenty of sense checking into as well, as does Craig Stammen.

especially when he's had one truly dominant year and it came at the age of 31.  It would be similar to Eppler trading Suarez for Blake Parker after the year he had in 2017.  The likelihood of a repeat for Yates isn't very high and Eppler can just go grab another Robles or Pena off the waiver wire.

to the same point, we should trade Parker if anyone is willing to give up anything of even reasonable value.

Exactly. He's not going to trade one of our 3 near-MLB ready SP prospects for a guy he grabbed off waivers once before. He'll just look for the next Kirby Yates.

I'd love to see him get Pirela, Villanueva, or Hedges though...

yep.  they could be a very interesting partner for us.  Could be a place to move Cozart although Tatis is pretty close and they'll be adding him to the 40 this winter.  They've also got Javy Guerra who can likely step in although he's not all that good.

in addition to Tatis who they will surely add

Josh Naylor (#15, AA), Allen was actually rule 5 eligible last year and had a really good offensive year at AA - .857 ops.  He's also their #25 prospect.

Ty France is a guy they could keep off.  He's entering age 24 season and was eligible last year.  put up an .819 ops in AA/AAA playing 1b, 3b, OF this year.

Buddy Reed just finished AA and struggled so he's probably safe without adding to the 40 man.

Same with AA OFer Edward Olivares.  Jacob Nix is already on their 40 and likely safe.

Agree that Rea could be a casualty.  Same with Lockett.

Chris Paddock was R5 last year and did well in A+/AA this year.  Really well.  2.10 era in 17 starts with 120k in 90 ip.  He's also their #5 prospect and ranked #35 in the top 100 so he'll be added.  If not, I would absolutely grab him in the rule 5.

Logan Allen, Cal Quantrill will absolutely be added.

Jesse Scholtens could be a a guy they don't add and he'll get picked up in the rule 5.  Struggled in AAA last year.

Anderson Espinoza is interesting is that he hasn't pitched since 2016 but was once one of the most highly touted foreign pitching prospects and still #12 on the pads prospect list.

Where it could get really interesting is with their relievers.  Phil Maton, Brad Wieck, Colton Brewer, Rowan Wick, and Miguel Diaz are all on the 40 man with good success in the minors and almost none in the majors.  This is where they could drop a bunch of guys.  They've also got Travis Radke (1.94 era at 4 levels last year with 91k in 78.2 ip.  converted to relief last year),  and few others they might consider keeping.

So they probably need about 5 spots on the 40 - man and even still, that would mean a bunch of potentially talented players floating in the breeze.

The other thing they've done because they are so deep is to delay the advancement of a bunch of guys so as not to make them visible for the R5 draft.

but they're gonna have to be pretty active now.

Eppler is going to be all over this, no doubt.

Ive been screaming for Hedges since the offseason began, he just seems like the kind of guy that’s going to blossom and be a legit bat and a good defender that handles the staff well.

Last spring the Padres tried to change Hedges swing. In doing so, he hurt his arm, and spent some time on the DL. Some people will tell you he hurt it throwing, but he hurt it swinging the bat. I believe he scrapped those swing changes and went back to his old swing.
