Mike Cameron was more valuable during his four years in Seattle than Griffey was his first four years in Cincinnati.

Not sure that qualifies as next to nothing.

Cameron was more valuable only because Griffey Jr. was hurt. He missed the majority of those years, playing in 145 G in 2000, 111, 70, and 53 G.

But yeah, Cameron was a solid player. It would be the equivalent of getting back Jackie Bradley Jr. and a bunch of scrub prospects that never pan out from the Red Sox or Aaron Hicks and a bunch of nobodies.

For the record: Jake Meyer, Antonio Perez, Brett Tomko and Mike Cameron was the trade, and two of those had ok careers in Seattle, but were they Jr? No.

Seattle was saved from really poor execution in trades and free agency by the acquisition of Ichiro in 2001.

They haven't been to the playoffs since 01.

MVP caliber players or former MVP winners almost never bring back value in trades. It almost always favors the team getting the star versus the team reloading.

The only exception I can think of is Mark Texieria to the Braves. That was a bad deal for the Braves.

Also, Miguel Cabrera could be on this list, and that trade to Detroit clearly doesn't favor the Marlins.

But Ichiro deserves to be in the playoffs since he is a hall of famer, or something like that.

I’m not saying Seattle was better off without Griffey, but considering he publicly stated he wanted to be closer to home, the mariners traded him and got something rather than losing him for nothing.

Also, injuries are a part of the game. Of course Ken Griffey Jr was obviously the better player, but Mike Cameron was worth about 5.5 more wins in his four years with Seattle than Griffey was in his 9 with Cincinnati.

Great post.  I’m sure it was very painful to trade Griffey but that deal worked out for the Mariners.

Too bad how things went for Griffey after he left the Mariners.
