I haven't looked too closely at his japanese stats but maybe he did have a similar problem there. A more competitive league will exploit weaknesses that lesser ones haven't. If I remember correctly he did have a somewhat high walk rate in japan.

It’s unbelievable how bad this offense has been, before the season I thought that wouldn’t be an issue in spring but my god .... this is insane.

2.6 BB/9 in 2015 and 2.9 BB/9 in 2016. That's definitely not high.
