Still waiting . . .

I doubt that you're really having that much troubling figuring it out.

its a ridiculously exaggerated depiction of an ethnic group for a laugh.  its racist in the same way that other cartoons depicting black and asian people were racist during that time.  the purpose is to belittle and mock.

Before I saw this pic, I had forgotten about Noc-a-Homa's other ritual - "blessing" the mound before every home game. Talk about appropriating a culture...

Wasn't the guy who did that an actual Native American?   At least that's what was always said when he would come out and do his thing...

No, that isn't the purpose of the logo. A 17 year-old was asked to draw a mascot that "would convey a spirit of pure joy and unbridled enthusiasm".  Prior to that , the paper used a picture of an Indian to convey whether the team had won or lost.

Yes, he was. Sometimes he would arrive late because he was outside the stadium protesting himself.

Sure.  That’s exactly what it is.  Just like how the kkk is just about being proud to be white.  Whatever man.  You’re willfully denying the obvious.  The guy who drew it up even says he was probably influenced by typical cartoon drawing of the time.  You conveniently chose to leave that nugget out though.

Are we sure this is what a happy Indian looks like? Does anyone here know any happy Indians who this could be compared to? If you went to any of the hundreds of tribes and asked someone to draw up a happy Indian do you think it would be similar? If this was your team would you really want this to be your identity?

Yes, he is. I have often wondered how much crap that he took from his own people for basically playing a living stereotype for the amusement of white people. According to the attached article, he approached the club about playing the role since they originally had a white guy doing it.

Whatever Happened To … Chief Noc-A-Homa (Levi Walker)

Good point. I recall Roberto Alomar and Jack McDowell lynching some Indianback in their heyday.

"Goldbach has said that he had difficulty "figuring out how to make an Indian look like a cartoon",and that he was probably influenced by the cartoon style that was popular at the time"

That's a far cry from:

"its a ridiculously exaggerated depiction of an ethnic group for a laugh"

and

"the purpose is to belittle and mock"

Your statement(s) goes directly to intent. That wasn't the case.

(there are the nuggets you desire)
