Angels may be in on SS Jelfry Marte

Second Base

Speaking with a source, the Angels have been closely linked with #3 international prospect SS Jelfry Marte for a couple years now. The Angels were interested but thoroughly outbid for his services by the Twins in this past July 2nd signing period. However their 3 million dollar deal was voided after the Twins didn't like something to do with his vision.

The Angels have been in contact with Marte and should be a major player for his services, should they not land Shohei Ohtani.

Mike Berardino of the Pioneer Press reports the Twins "still have a shot" to sign Dominican shortstop Jelfry Marte.

Marte had his $3 million dollar deal with the Twins voided after concerns arose over his physical, with reports stating that it was a vision issue. Berardino reports that there are "no hard feelings" between the two parties, and that an agreement still could be worked out. Many considered the 16-year-old shortstop to be the best international position player this summer. After making trades with the Mariners and Angels where they gave up a million dollars in allocated funds to each club, the most they could offer Marte without acquiring money would be $1.25 million.

While I think every one of us would prefer having Ohtani, signing this kid who was the best international prospect available this past year along with Maitan who was the best international prospect coming out two years ago, damn that's a good silver lining if we're to lose out on the Ohtani sweepstakes..

Yes. It would be a good consolation prize but the real victory would be Ohtani. Shit if we could sign him and still have a little leftover to sign severino that would be a raping of the international market.

.....what?

That comes down to personal preference. Pearson will have a shorter path to the majors and comes with greater offensive upside. But Pearson is also a liability in the field, and Marte figures to stay at SS or 2B.

I prefer Marte because he's a more complete player, but to each his own.
