Mariners acquire 2B Dee Gordon

I don't get it. I thought they were going to have Nelson Cruz play outfield if Ohtani signs with them so he could DH. Doesn't playing Dee Gordon in CF complicate that?

Not necessarily. Dipoto could flip Gamel or Haniger or Heredia for arms, which they need, and he'll trade anyone.

That came out of nowhere.  Closes the book on one of the options the Angels had for 2nd.

Remember that we have PLENTY of other options for the keystone this off-season: http://thesportsdaily.com/angels-win/angelswin-com-2018-primer-series-middle-infield/

Jason Kipnis, Cesar Hernandez, Brad Miller, Neil Walker, Zack Cozart, Ian Kinsler, Greg Garcia, and Martin Prado are just some of the likely available names. All of them are good defensive choices. This Gordon move has zero impact on Eppler's ability to improve.

This is fine.  I was never excited about getting Dee Gordon to play 2B, would much rather trade a bit more and get Hernandez.

I do feel additional international money won’t tip the scales.  It’s nice to have, sure, but Ohtani clearly is most interested in the team that will maximize his value and legacy.  Otherwise, he would have waited two more years to come over.

No, but Gordon may have come at an easier price to pay than some of those. We will find out soon. May not be much since Mariners don't have much farm to trade from.

And none of those bring elite speed, which is something we need somewhere on the 25-man still.

The thing that’s hilarious is that Dipoto probably thinks this is such a genius move.  He probably thinks it’s so outside the box.  He’s uncovered so much untapped value !!

“Dee Gordon is so fast he’ll range all over the OF and steal so many hits”

never mind that Gordon has no arm and no serious mlb experience in CF.   And also, has pretty significant question marks around his PED free bat.
