Should Arte Moreno be the first to go?

Recommended Posts

I give the guy credit, hes gone out and signed what was suppose to be the best offensive free agents in baseball in back to back off seasons. He's trying. If these two bums would produce like they should be then we'd be talking about how great he is. Is it fair to say almost all of us loved the signings when they happened?

The only thing id like to see now is him fire someone on this coaching staff just to wake these guys up. The season looks to be a lost cause so he might as well fire them now and let whoever takes over have half a year to try things out.

Not a big Arte fan.  He's acquired players like he was one of these angelswin board members whose favorite season is hot stove.

Disney won a World Series championship.  They established the uniforms which has stood the test of time - 12 years - an eternity in Angels history.

They remodeled the stadium.

For the reasons above, Disney is the gold standard for Angels ownership.

yk has a good point.    Disney = ONLY ownership to preside over a WS title, and also hired Stoneman to solidify the org.

Were they solid spenders?    Of course not, and I would be concerned whether they would sign a Trout to a long term deal at the right time.   However, Stoneman was smart to not sign age +30 players to behemoth contracts.

Hunter is the ONLY incoming FA signing with that kind of deal to pay solid dividends.

Depends on what you consider spenders.  They didn't spend on players.  But they did spend on the team and fans.  In the form of stadium renovations.  Which resulted in probably the best stadium contract in the country that Arte is still benefitting from.

Also, Disney as a whole spent billions during that period, and as a side effect made getting out of Angels stadium probably one of the easiest tasks around, especially up Gene Autry Way, and right into the carpool lane.

Rhetorical pondering:  What do Arte Moreno and Jerry Jones have in common?

A:  They are major sports owners who should fire the team owner, but can't

<note: all this, ignoring the huge amount on money each has invested in their team. community, etc>

<footnote:  if you have to have your team win and only win to enjoy a pastime, you may be enthusiastic about the wrong things>

GMJr says hey.....

GMJr = mandate from Arte to make a big splash. basically after the relative success of Guerrero on- and off- field I believe Moreno pushed to make a splash move regularly. Highly uncharacteristic of anything Stoneman had done before, and surpisingly similar to the kinds of moves made under Reagins and now Dipoto's GM.

He hired GMJ to play CF. Then he hired Torii to fill the OF. Then Wells. Then Pujols. Then Hamilton. all big power bats with well known names, and all big free agents brought in at positions where we didn't need them.

In fact the way those signings were all handled were very similar to one another. The free agents met with Arte and the teaem presdient pesronally. In the case of teh Hamilton signing Dipoto wasn't even present, and possibly wasn't even aware of the deal. The free agents were then offered "take it or leave it" offers that were off the table if the player left the room.

The big splashes have tied up huge portions of the budget, and giving Scioscia a 10 year contract as a manager has apparently created problems in the clubhouse. Based on not-to-thinly veiled comments in the media, Scioscia and Dipoto have completely contradictory philosophies. Moreno has kept Scioscia on board becasue he has a public perception of being a face of the franchise, and is still owed a lot of money.

I'd much rather have Moreno own the team than some DBag like Loria, but he should leave his GM's alone to build a winning team rather than signing players for name recognition at the expense of the team winning.

I clearly remember Disney wanting out of the Angels so bad that Eisner was on television saying the team was for sale as the World Series had just ended minutes before.

**** Disney.

They deserve lot of critiques for things like cheerleaders, mascots, and unis.

Still, it was Disney who essentially got the ball rolling on the 2000s, and did make significant improvements to the stadium (with Edison's help).

Arte's money helped to stabilize the team in 2004 after a bad 2nd half of 2003, but it's also hurt us with bad signings becoming more commonplace the past few years as he seemingly pushes too hard to create a big name for the team, to the point of harming the org in other places (farm, scouting, foreign presence).
