Alexander the Great, I believe, is one of the few generals ever to conquer Afghanistan, and even he didn't hold it very long. It's a tribal culture and the men there live for warfare.

The British tried several times to subdue them. On one occasion they lost every single man except one in a desperate retreat across the Khyber Pass. The lone survivor was an army surgeon. The British lost 16,000 men.
