I enjoyed the first season of the show, but I kinda felt that it deserved an actual ending rather than have it continue on for several years. It has a real WTF aspect to it, that I just don't think plays well when adapted to television. Changing the alternate history book to a series of film reels moves the story from strange yet believable to pure scifi.

What I found interesting was that 'the bad guy' is clearly the most interesting character, and the guy the audience ends up rooting for him. I think that speaks to how well that role was written and acted, while also reflecting poorly on the show's leads.

Since I didn't read the book, I don't have anything to reference or compare to, so I really can't comment on that.

I think for a TV series, they needed to have films or something visual so the impact is greater to both the characters and the audience. i suppose they could act out scenes in a book so we can experience it, but I don't think it would have the same effect as seeing it on film.

If you're referring to Obergruppenfuhrer John Smith, the series does an excellent job of showing him having a normal life with a loving family, while at the same time, showing him being a despicable murderous human being.  The same can be said for many Nazis during WWII who were slaughtering human beings without second thought while going home and being a loving father and husband.

I haven't read the book either, in discussing the show I've read that in the book someone is writing a series of books or a single book where the chapters describe events from the war in our timeline. When I heard that something sort of clicked for me as to why the series feels a bit off for me.

With Obergruppenfuhrer and actually every character in the story we see how easily, with the passage of time, people adapt, move on, and just go with the flow. Obergruppenfuhrer is the prototypical 1960's dad, living the prototypical life, except he goes to work every day and does Nazi shit... all to protect his way of life. The existence of the book makes people question whether or not their current reality has to be the way that it is - do we have to go and do Nazi shit every day to protect the life we have for ourselves and our family. I totally get why they change it from a book to film reels, but by changing the alternate history from an idea to something tangible they change the story to scifi, and the character motivations really go out the window.

It's not until I learned that the reels were originally a book that I could start to piece together the original themes that are kind of lost below the surface now.

didn't intend for this to be a "what are you watching now" thread. was mainly looking for things i may have missed over the years.

alas, it's subjective. thanks for the recommendations. i'm taking mt's bosch rec.

i notice no one listed movies, anything epic or that you've watched five times and would still watch?

For lighter side movie I have always enjoyed watching Stripes .   So many great lines .  That's the fact Jack!

I have enjoyed the Marvel shows on Netflix, Daredevil, jessica jones and luke cage.

Also, and I think an even better show is Bosch on Amazon.  Very good TV and I think Titus Welliver should get an emmy nod.

great recommendation, man. just finished it today.

it was weird because while i'm watching it, the first season and start of the second didn't grab me and i never ended an episode where i had to watch the next one right away (until the second half or so of season 2). so it was just ok in my books, but i am such a sucker for noire type of shows. the jazz was great, i absolutely love historic la and landmarks...which they did a great job with the cinematography, the stoic detective lead (some similarities to ray donovan, actually). welliver was super solid and i always dig when people from the wire show up in shows with the 2nd lead being marlo from the show, lance reddick again plays a police chief, and even the attorney from the show was the casino manager.

so i kept watching because i loved the vibe of the show (as much as i love crime dramas, i loathe when family issues or love interests become focal points like they did in season one) and then that point during the second season just dominoed a bunch of oh shit moments back to back to back, etc. just a wild season that was one of the better ones i have seen....i don't think i was this hooked on a season or enjoyed it as much since season one of true detective.

can't wait for the third season. really good show.

I've watched the shows I listed within the last year. most of them in the past few months. tried not to include any older shows, like the Gilmore Girls

btw, Adam is an idiot. season 2 kicked ass

Glad you enjoyed it.  I think the episode involving the chief and his son is one of the best episodes of any tv I've watched.

couldn't agree more. i don't want to give away and spoilers or talk about particulars because it will skew someone else's perception if they choose to watch it.

that definitely caught me off guard and the who thing pulled at the heart strings. that was around the time where the show just picked up left and right and every story arc was full steam ahead with more surprises than the previous one. great tv.

Stranger Things on Netflix is just plain good. It is bundling up all the best of the 80's  SciFi into one show and has a solid cast. I have no desire to try and over analyze it, it's just way more fun to sit back and let them tell you the story rather than trying to sleuth it out.

My wife, son and I just started watching this. We are only two episodes in, but it's really good. Like X-Files meets Goonies.

No one has recommended "You're the Worst" yet. It's a comedy from FXX and it's really really good. Season three just ended yesterday.

good call.

for me it started out strong, lagged a bit , then picked up again.
