In the draft thread my wife looked at the picture of Torii Hunter Jr signing and thought Torii Sr had signed up to be with the Angels again. Lots of family resemblance but I had to point out that Dad's hairstyle is more... aerodynamic.

Sounds to me like your wife is a racist

I've watched Busenitz enough times to know he seems to get better every time I see him. The velo has trended upward and he does it with an easy enough arm slot and effort.

My concern is that his firm fastball just does not move. He hides it so well that it just jumps on hitters, and that's good, but if a hitter guesses right (as major leaguers are prone to do) he can be hit consistently and hard. His off-speed offerings are also pretty average or slightly below. If he can learn to control them and use them frequently then it could make his fastball really play up.

What about LHP converted starter-to-reliever Tyler De Loach, just promoted recently to AAA?    At AA, he had a sub 2.00 ERA, sub 1.00 WHIP, and over a K per inning pitched.

I had almost forgotten about him.

DeLoach is a lefty specialist.  Fastball is in the mid to upper 80's as a starter and upper 80's,  touching 90 occasionally as a reliever.  Big dude, comes from a wacky angle, could really make for an uncomfortable AB for most LHB.

Perhaps we'll get some value out of Middleton. Wonder if his velo has climbed since transitioning to the pen. He used to hover around 92.

Jeremy Rhoades, rhp, Angels. Rhoades, the Angels’ No. 25 prospect entering the season, seems to be turning the corner on a rough season. He extended his scoreless run to 11 innings Saturday with seven shutout frames for high Class A Inland Empire, which fell to High Desert (Rangers) 2-1. The fourth-round pick from Illinois State has seen tremendous growth from a year ago when posted an 8.35 ERA and .310 opponents' batting average in the Cal League. Rhoades works mostly with a sinker/slider combination with a fastball from 89-92 mph and a slider in the 82-85 range.

Yeah good to see Middleton starting to show something. Vega, Jones, and Hermosillo all look like they're starting to come around too.

Some of us were excited about Ryan Vega when he was drafted because he was the rare athletic projectable type in the Dipoto drafts ..  He didn't do much of anything last year but he's off to a really really nice start this season...  Would be great if he ends up being a player.

I was similarly excited about Alex Abbott when he was drafted, and he shows a little something every year.  Still have yet to see him put it all together, but maybe someday.

Speaking of athletic types, Jahmai Jones looks downright fantastic right now.  He looks like a star, playing against guys 3 years older than he is.  I think we've found ourselves something special here.

I think I remember us talking about Abbott -- he was a guy I was expecting to see a little more than he showed last season..  A buddy of mine who scouts for another team was really high on him and how his bat had been looking in the instructs -- a lot of talk about the sound coming off his bat when he made contact..  Sucks he cratered as badly as he did in Burlington -- then again, 100 plate appearances is a tiny sample size.

Hermosillo, Vega, Abbott and Jones could do a lot to help what's hurting this team.   Let's hope they continue to make strides and in Abbott's case, shake off his struggles.

I haven't seen Vega yet, but I can say that Herm looks like a different ball player this year. He's even bigger, and he's playing with a ton of confidence. It makes a huge difference. Rather than looking like a kid playing up a grade, he looks like a star, just completely comfortable.

I've heard some good things about Abbott too. He's been projected to add strength to his already strong but wiry frame in much the same way that scouts anticipated Grichuk doing. So far, Alex has continued to get stronger, and he has some solid bat speed. I think he'll finally be ready for A Ball next year. Sometimes it just takes guys a little longer, but once they figure it out, they blossom. Mark Trumbo was one of those.

Speaking of Grichuk -- watched a couple of his AAA games, he is so out of whack right now..   Totally swinging out of his shoes,  just looked awful.  He needs to hit the reset button in a big big way.  Instead of going down and working on the things he wasn't doing well he seems to be trying to force the things he is actually good at.  Dunno who the hitting instructor in AAA is, but he looks worse in AAA than he did before his demotion IMO.

Plenty of guys come up to the bigs, dominate, then get figured out and fade away. Maybe Grichuk is one such guy.
