I do not see any real skill set in Arakawa's game. If anything he's a utility guy on the infield. A replacement for Pennington after next season?

I'd rather see Sherman Johnson who can play 2B, 3B and the outfield. He gets on base, has some speed and pop.

Sherm's numbers so far this season are much better than last season. .276/.369/.473/ and an OPS of .842 w/ 8 HR, 9 SB so far on the season.

Cal Towey is looking good though. .294/.407/.455 is not too shabby. Would like to see more power though (only 4 HR, the most he's hit in a season is 10).

I think Sherm's reached the point in his career where it's utility or bust. He won't offer enough to be a feature position player, but he does enough at 2B and 3B as well as his ability to run that he won't hurt you late in the game. What hurts Sherman is that he just isn't a SS. He play there in a pinch but he doesn't fit there.

Arakawa has an Izturis type of skill set. He does enough of the little things that add up to pretty decent little utility infielder. He can pick it all over the infield.

The Orem Owlz debuted tonight, and unfortunately, they got walked off by allowing 3 runs in the 9th.  That said, there were some really good initial outings

Jahmai Jones 1-4

Troy Montgomery 1-4

Jordan Zimmerman 1-4, hr, 2bi.  Hr'd in his first professional at bat

Brennon Lund 2-3, hr, bb.  21yo (not 22 til nov), OF/DH out of BYU.  Drafted in the 11th round.  Will not be doing a mission according to reports.  LHed bat.  RHed throw.  5'10, 190lb.  .985ops as a jr.  Led the WCC in hitting with a .387avg.

Connor Justus 2-4

Nick Flair 1-4, hr, 2rbi.  A 34th round pick last year.  23yo from Univ of Tampa.  6'3, 200lb.  Spent most of 2015 struggling at burlington.  1b/3b/DH

Little background on Lund, our 11th round pick. By talent alone he was projected to go by the 4th round. For one reason or another, teams were scared off (might have something to do with perceived mission). It's highly likely the Angels grabbed him immediately after the 10th round because they felt they could offer more money to potentially sign him out of other commitments. Most 11th round picks are signed for more money than 10th round picks because they aren't as strictly tied to bonus money allotted for teams. So fever ally speaking, an 11th round pick is the type of player you felt should have gone earlier in the draft.

As for Lund himself, he's apparently exceedingly strong, as in even stronger than he looks (i.e. Grichuk, Altuve etc).

Kind of a bummer that Orem didn't play today.

A

Michael Hermosillo - just got his season started for whatever reason.  Could not find out why he wasn't part of the team earlier.  Signed out of Ottawa HS in Ottawa, IL as a 28th rounder from the 2013 draft.  1-2 today.  .265/.808ops as a 21 year old.  He was definitely a high ceiling guy and got the full 100k plus incentives with each level he's moved and his future schooling paid for.  He struggled at A ball last year but has hit the ground running so far.  (he left the game early today, so hopefully, he's ok).

Even with his struggles last year, he walked 51 times in 376 pa with only 59k.  He's got 5 tools and is apparently a tremendous athlete as a 3 sport star in hs (track, football, and baseball)

He's shown speed with 36 sbs but has been caught 22 times so he obviously needs to work on his technique.  He's mostly played CF so far.  His line drive power has yet to translate as he's had some trouble putting bat to ball, but he's got a real awareness of the strike zone.

He's built low at 5'11 (if that) but goes 190 so he's pretty built.  Bats and throws RHed

One of those guys we were fortunate to have sign and hopefully, things are starting to come together for him.  Frankly, with a solid season, he moves up to my top 15 just because of his athleticism, tools and the fact that he's only really started concentrating on baseball for a few years now.

A guy to watch out for over the next couple years.

Luis Pena 4ip, 3h, 0er, 0bb, 6k.  Looks like they are starting to stretch him a bit with 4ip in 4 of his last 5 appearances.  During that time he's pitched 19 innings with 7h, 1er, 8bb (5 of them in his only 3 inning appearance so 3bb in 16 of those innings), and 25k.

Overall on the season he's at 41.2ip, 26h, 21bb, 52k.  So he's done a nice job of bringing down the bb.  2.16 era.

Again, he was suspended before the 2014 season for PED.  At the time, he was an 18yo in the DR, so it was before his professional career began.

Now just 20yo, he's been missing bats all season.

BTW, props to Taylor Blake Ward for having info on some of these lesser known guys on his site.

Eury Sanchez - picked up from the Giants org.  23yo rher.  Just joined burlington.  has 150k in 109.1ip as a reliever.  2.26 era.

You really have to pay attention to the minor league rosters to keep up with Eppler and his staff as we've been picking guys up left and right from other orgs.  If we are trying to find clean peanuts for the major league club, then on the minor league side, we are constantly looking for clean corn.  (that sounds bad but just go with it. )

A+

Baldoquin (He lives!).  2-4, bb.  played 2b.  .196 avg.

Ward 1-4, 2b, bb.  .224avg

Houchins 3-5, 2 doubles.  .213.

Arakawa 2-4, bb, SB (7).  .283/.725 with a .359 obp.

Kevin Grendell another scoreless inning with a bb and k.  1.17era.

Keynan Middleton 2ip, 2h, 1er, 5k.  4.05 era.  What I felt was a huge reach as our 3rd rounder in 2013, he was dreadful through 2015.  Even though his era is still high, his peripherals are much better this year.  33.1ip, 22h, 17bb, 49k.  7 long balls though which is the reason he's getting stung.  Still only 22 in A+ so he could develop into a nice reliever.  Has a good arm.  Low 90's fastball which might be a tick up considering that it's been awhile since anyone wrote about him.

AA

Eric Aguilera 3-4, 2b, bb, 2rbi.  .277/.783.

Jabari Henry 2-3, 2bb, hr (8th).  .256/.820.  Started out strong, tailed off, and has gotten hot again.  Hitting .379 over his last 10 games and with 4hr in his last 5.

Bo Way 3-4, 5rbi, 3b, bb.  .273/.666.

Tyler Carpenter 5.1ip, 5h, 1er, 1bb, 4k.  3.89 era at AA.  Was unhittable in A+ earlier in the year.  Combined 70ip, 54k, 2.44era.

AAA
Cowart 1-3, bb.  .292/.787.

Tyler DeLoach 2.1ip, 4h, 0er, 1bb, 2k.  Been working in relief this year.  Between AA/AAA 36.1ip, 29h, 1.49era with 8bb and 40k.  .160baa vs. lefties.  Big and tall Lher (6'6, 240) but fastball sits in the upper 80's.  Touches 90's on occasion.  We might see him soon as a lefty specialist.  At least in September.  Always been nasty vs. lefties because of his low arm slot.

Middleton was 94-96 when I saw him. Nice slider to go with the heat.

Any movement on the fastball?  His bb rate is still pretty high.  I presume he gives up the long ball when he's behind as most young pitchers do.  I would also imagine he has some trouble throwing his breaking ball for a strike.  Once he learns how to do that, my guess is that he'll move pretty quick.

Woops, supposed to be 93-95. His fastball is straight but he has this little turn in his delivery to make it sneak up on you. He is obviously really athletic too so the tempo is there for a reliever. His slider is his out pitch so he mostly pounds it early with the 94.

AZL

Gabriel Santana 2-3, bb.  1bman.  20yo with 3 years in the DSL and 1 in AZL.  Struggled last year as he was a bit over matched.  According to TBW (taylor blake ward), he's got a line drive gap power swing with room to grow.  Good discipline even though it didn't really show up in the stat line last year.  Signed for 180k out of Venezuela as a 16yo.

Ryan Vega 3-4, 2b, rbi, sb.  Struggled last year at the AZL in limited pt.  Now a 19yo OFer.  14th round pick out of El Paso CC.  Good speed.  Limited power.

Yefry Santana 2-4, 3b,   20yo Dominican who is a mystery.  Apparently has a lot of raw tools.

Oliver Ortega 3ip, 1h, 0er, 2bb, 3k.  DSL last year.  19yo RHer.  Had an ok performance in the DSL last year.

Tyler Warmoth 2ip, 1h, 0er, 2k.  Undrafted.  24yo.

Jason Broussard 2ip, 2h, 1bb, 1k.   23yo undrafted FA.

Connor Lillis-white 2ip, 0er, 3k.  32nd round pick in 2015.  Solid show in the AZL last year, but about to turn 24 in July.

Orem

Jones 2-5

Troy Montgomery 1-2, bb, sac, HBP.  MS is in a meeting right now to get him called up.

Zimmerman and Lund 1-4

Franklin Torres 3-5, 2b, 3rbi.  2 throwing errors playing 3b.  19yo playing his 3rd season stateside after a year at the azl as well as split Orem and AZL last year.  Solid as an 18yo with a .694 ops at AZL. Not much power but a .348 obp with 11 sbs and 1 CS.  .279avg.  Again, he was 18.  Another raw infielder with tools.

Michael Barash  C from Tex AM.  9th rounder.  2-5

Nick Flair 2-5, hr (2), 34th rounder.  23yo.

Crusito Mieses 5ip, 7h, 2er, 0bb, 4k.  4 hits and 2 runs in the first.  Then he settled.  6'5", 190.  DR signing.  19 yo.  Did well in the DSL.  Struggled in the AZL last year.  FB 88-92 and touches 94, but room to grow.  Downward angle on his fastball is good.  Solid Change and developing 12-6 curve.

Ariel Ovando 1ip, 1k.  He's an interesting story.  Now 22yo, he signed a 2.6mil bonus with the Astros as a position player at 16yo.  He was a rule 5 to the cubs in 2014.  In 2015, he pitched for their AZL team.  21ip, 10h, 1er, 10bb, 33k.  0.43era.  My guess is that if he throws up a similar performance, he will be added to the 40 man and protected from any future rule 5 draft.  He's 6'4, and 250lbs.

This is for AO btw, but take notice of how many foreign players were highlighted between Arizona and Orem.  More guys crossing over than I can remember for a long time.

Alex Blackford 6ip, 4h, 3er, 5bb, 7k.  3.56 era.

Hey @Adam a black guy with power!

Found this blurb today...

Angels OF prospect Jabari Henry homered for the third game in a row Monday in a win for Double-A Arkansas.

In doing so, he extended his hitting streak to seven games. Over that span he's hit .462 with five homers and nine RBI. 15 of Henry's 20 RBI this year have come in the month of June. The 25-year-old's first go-round in Double-A didn't go so well. He hit just .170 with 99 strikeouts in 288 at-bats for Double-A Jackson last year. Henry signed a minor league deal with Los Angeles after the Mariners released him in spring training.
