Those socialized health care countries are sucking off our tit when it comes to innovation in the health sector.  Wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that there is no profit in it...

In the US you get world class health care because there is an incentive to do it.  Other countries you get no better than a patch job.

We're also the third most populous country so it only makes sense that we should rank high.  That said, China and India are 1 and 2 respectively in population and rank 2 and 9 respectively on the list.  So yeah, whatever.

UK 1 document per 299 people

US 1 document per 40 people

Any way you look at it the US dominates the field.

'Merica! Where making profit on illness is considered a good thing!

Seriously, what other true incentives do doctors have?  They have to go to school forever and constantly stay current in their field, they face lawsuits out the ass, and they have to deal with the sick public.  Altruism isn't gonna give us enough doctors.

Well, I do think the first incentive in choosing a medical profession is in actually wanting to help people. But my issue isn't with doctors, its with pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, and hospitals - all of whom profit from chronic illnesses. Doctors do as well, but less so, and there's always going to be a need for doctors.

way to miss the point

I get your point. You think socialized health care is BS, and that countries with socialized health care rely upon American research.

But as usual, you bring a very partial angle to the table. You also seem to miss the fact that by tying medical research to profit, it limits what is researched, and what people will put money into. The focus becomes on: "What drug or treatment can we create that will lead to lots of $$$" rather than "What drug or treatment can we create that will make people better?"

You don't think these researches are helping people?  Just because they aren't focusing on what you care about then it isn't helping?
