Bummer for the guy and his family. At least he died doing what he loved and in a place that meant a lot to him, if there is any solace in that.

North Face makes some good stuff, but they make some not great stuff too. I like Mountain Hardware, Marmot and Prana as much, if not more.

dying from hypothermia when you founded a company that makes cold weather gear?

you know what that's like?

It's like rain on your wedding dayIt's a free ride when you've already paidIt's the good advice that you just didn't take

except it's not really like any of those except maybe the 2nd one.

It would be like someone here who was kind of young going to the after dark forum and asking advice about breaking up with his girl, and then ignoring all of it.

I am sure he knew exactly his fate when he wasn't able to be immediately plucked from the water. He had time to think about his life, family and friends before slipping into unconsciousness. Depending on how he viewed his life it may not have been the worst way to go.

Dude had a pretty incredible life. One of his best friends, Yvon Chouinard was the founder of Patagonia. Tompkins took a lot of his fortune and spent it buy land in Chile and Argentina to preserve it for future generations...some of the most amazing places on earth.

There is a documentary about a journey they took as kids, driving from the US to the tip of South American and Patagonia to surf and climb a mountain that had never been conquered.
