At this point, I don't think they ever will be fiscally conservative again, except in talking points. My hopes of a balanced budget or surplus just aren't going to happen. 

So that leaves two choices it seems. Tax and spend or borrow and spend. I don't like taxes but with the overall debt being a main concern of mine, anything to stop it from growing even more would be preferred. 

I feel gross posting that.

You are 100% correct except increased taxes just means increased spending. They will never pay down any debt. At least not in our lifetimes
