Pick a third player

Recommended Posts

We had a thread a while back about who you would pick number 1 to start a franchise. Lets say youve already struck gold and grabbed trout and kershaw (in the regular season) so youre set there (to get rid of obvious picks). Whos next?

Bonus points for less in the spotlight types.

Do you go more pitching and have a kershaw/grienke combo, or a second big bat and have a manny/ortiz combo?

You have to assume the Harpers and Stantons along with other top tier players are gone so erase each teams top position and pitcher from the list. That makes it interesting as to which second tier players would be the most valuable.

Strange as it sounds Pujols would be available but I would still be looking younger so I would prefer a guy like Bryant that is yet to reach star level but can bring a long term bat to the team.

Tough to not pick Stanton as well.

I think Stanton is an excellent player and would love to have him on the Angels but I don't see him as a next level franchise type player.

I think guys with a huge swing like him tend to decline.

What about altuve? Go with a fangerous leadoff guy to complement trout?

Id probably go with goldschmidt or stanton, but blarg is right, the point is (mostly) about the non franchise guys being available, so who is the best of the next tier.

Posey is a good pick for the same reason 3Bs are so rare.

Along those lines, i like matt carpenter. Covers 3B, can bat leadoff and set up your 3 hitter

Altuve would be my pick just because he is so much fun to watch play.

I would also be wary of investing large in pitching considering how prone to injury they are. For all the guys crashing into rails, walls and each other, few suffer a long term injury but each team seems to have at least one pitcher go down and many don't return to form.

There are tons of defensive glove only guys, I wouldn't waste my 3rd pick on that although defense suppresses runs as well as good pitching, currently there is a power outage in baseball so that is where the true gold is right now. As long as it isn't an Adam Dunn one dimensional hitter that really doesn't know how to use a glove.

Still looking at Bryant as the logical 3rd pick in that he has decent enough fielding and plenty of offensive growth ahead of him. Later picks can be toolsy shortstops and a Johnny G to shake things up.

Stanton was already picked as a first rounder by someone else. What's your back up pick?

You're on the clock.

What? Okay.

Mark me down for that AS kid from the Mets who was throwing darts last night.

EDIT: Jacob DeGrom

Tough call between Cutch and Stanton. It's rare to find consistency but these guys somehow pull it off.

No, it's really not since you don't lose with either player. Both are All Stars, both are superstar quality players so it is simply what position do you want to fill with the best player at that position.

Try a little head work and come up with a guy that hasn't lead the leagues in offensive categories. Someone that would be a leftover after 30 teams sucked up the top 60 players. You've got Trout and Kershaw, now who is a 2nd tier player to add to that roster?
