UCL tears are incredibly common these days and affect players who haven't thrown nearly as many pitches. It has more to do with conditioning and mechanics.

I expected it last year when they announced he had a "partially torn ligament". I don't know how you nurse a torn ligament to being un-torn but that is supposedly what he did somehow. He said he felt no pain at all after his first ST start. But I think everybody knows that the elbow soreness announcement will come any day.

 

Ervin Santana had a partially torn ligament in 2009 (5.03 ERA) and has pitched a 1,000 innings since. So it CAN be done even if unlikely.
