His annual salaries, once he reaches the majors if he turns out to be good, will be something like...

510K

530K

570K

3.5M

6.5M

11M

And that's just above average good. If he's an All Star or an MVP type then you're looking at 5-9-16 or something for his arb years.

both scenarios work out famously for the red sox. the only scenario really that bites for them is if he sucks and is a total bust. i just don't see that happening. he looks really good. even if he were to turn out to be an average mlb'er, it's not really that bitter of a pill to swallow. he and this contract have way more upside then many are giving it credit for. hell, the tax itself is probably a huge write off for them.

None of the money being paid goes towards the team luxury tax.

Just one big fat tax write off.

$31.5 million has been assessed as a tax to the Red Sox that have to pay it off by June. That is a tax that requires a quicker pay off than a luxury tax and they get nothing to show for it this season because Moncada is going to the minor leagues to learn how to play in MLB.

I believe they view it as a investment Blarg.

What if he turns out to be a very solid MLB player, someone like Howie. Would you have been ok with the Angels spending $80+ million on Howie for his first five years?

that come out to about  $85 million for a guy who not only has never played 1 game in mlb, but also is coming to a new country.

but I'm sure red sox fans will be extremely patient with him if he struggles
