Angels Acquire Drew Butera From Dodgers

Recommended Posts

@pedromoura: New Angels backup C Drew Butera, acquired from Dodgers: throws hard on mound and behind plate, fine framer, lots of passed balls, can't hit.

Compared to Iannetta, yes he's a 'fine' pitch framer, but compared to Conger, he blows.

Plus calls:

Conger, +160

Butera, +11

Iannetta, -40

So just don't let him catch Richards. Ever.

Most of our staff, especially Richards pitched, light years better with Conger behind the mound than he did with Iannetta (can't frame or block to save his life). I still maintain the Conger trade was a mistake.

That's a bit of an overstatement. Conger was a great pitch framer, but that's pretty much the limit of his capabilities. Only Richards and Shoemaker showed significantly better numbers with Conger. Everyone else was either too small a sample size or not enough of a difference to say they were "light years better" with one or the other.

Trading him could prove to be a mistake, but the Angels got a pretty nice return for him all things considered.

I'm sure both will crumple and lose all ability to throw a baseball without Conger's enlightened guidance.
