Why bunt there?

Recommended Posts

Typical Scioscia decision. It wasn't like Pujols was at first base. Aybar puts one down the line or in the gap and Trout scores. Aybar hits a single and we have 1-3 no one out. Aybar doesn't do either and we take a chance that one of the most efficient base stealers in the game can get to second on his own.

Good analysis.

Bunting is better than Aybar striking out and Pujols grounding into a double play to end the game. By bunting, they made sure Hamilton got his third K of the day.

Trout would not have been on first that long for this to even occur. No way is Aybar making it through an entire K and Pujols GIDP without Trout attempting to swipe 2nd.

Every manager in baseball would have bunted in that situation?

No way.  Not with Trout running.

You guys are situational blind sometimes.

Chapman is a left hander that keeps baserunners close and has a 100 mph fastball to get the ball home quickly. Trout's chances of actually stealing on him, having zero previous experience with him on the mound is stretching even Trout's abilities.

Hit and run with Aybar that hits line drives is asking for a double play. Aybar does have exceptional bat control bunting so you go with his best attribute at the plate and eliminate weaknesses.

Now, last night you all clamored about why pitch to Votto and yet none of you started a thread about why pitch to Pujols with one out, first base open and a lefty/lefty matchup following Pujols. Did Baker screw up?
