A midseason trade might be for additional younger arms, or as mentioned earlier, a veteran from a fire sale.  The angels have options in the form of middle infielders, don't they?

I have bigger concerns about how Scioscia will run spring training than our pitching.  Based on the past two years, Koufax, Drysdale, Gibson and Cy young could be pitching and the Angels would still be out of the race by the end of May.

Another young arm would be nice. I'd love to get someone Nick Kingham from the Pirates. Edited by SoWhat

Dipoto can't possibly be satisfied with the depth I the rotation. He's basically wishing for a miracle to happen for this rotation to stay healthy and all produce at super high levels.

Sign Capuano and another pitcher to a minor league contract and I will feel much better.

only reason I see us staying put with this rotation is that ALL extra money will go to the Trout extension otherwise it makes no sense to not secure more pitching - wasn't that our number 1 goal going into the offseason?

Well, it's only Barry Zito, but this is still a thing:

"Last we checked in with lefty Barry Zito, it was to learn that his option was being declined by the Giants. The reason, reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, is that Zito has apparently not done anything to pursue a contract. Though he is not necessarily hanging up his spikes for good, says Heyman, the 36-year-old will seemingly not pitch in 2014."

We could end up making mid-season moves out of desperation because we're ten games back.

I'm sorry, but the GM and the rest of the brain trust should have had a decent, proven rotation set to begin the season. Right now it's Weaver and Wilson, then a lot of question marks.

If they are ten games back and they aren't selling off then Arte need not wait til after the season is over to fire them all.

Either that or wait to see if Erv is still available after the 2014 draft, no draft pick lost and maybe the asking price is down enough.

Now, about that needing 4-6 weeks to get ready and the every other year thingy?

The best pitching option may actually emerge after the season begins.  At least I keep telling myself that.  I would guess that Dipoto is laying the groundwork for a mid season trade.

Just a thought.

Here is the problem with that:

If the last two seasons have proven anything, getting off to a good start is very important.  The Angels can't afford another poor start.

the average number of starters used last year by playoff teams was 11 or 12. the lowest number used was by the tigers at a substantially lower number of 8. try to find 11 or 12 starters for the angels to use this year, then look at your top 8. i dare you.

best post on here in a long time, IMO.  And completely terrifying.
