Interview conducted by David Saltzer on January 25, 2014

For fans, there's something special about a local kid making it to the Major League club. It's easier to root for a local product. And, when he's as straight-forward and down-to-earth as Grant Green, rooting for him becomes even easier.

Grant Green was part of a special group of players from Orange County who have all ended up playing for the Angels. It included Hank Conger, Andrew Romine, and Mark Trumbo. Interestingly enough, they all played together or against each other at various times and maintained connections that lasted up to the Major Leagues. In our interview, Grant talks about their overlapping stories.

Nicknamed "Mandime" by C. J. Wilson (for both his number and his looks), Grant Green has been working hard this offseason to improve his defense at second base. Known for being an offensive second baseman, Grant has been working with Bobby Grich on his defense to make that an asset too.

Prior to coming to the Angels, Grant was a member of the Oakland A's. We talked with him about the differences between the organizations. While a member of the A's, Grant was moved through a few positions including shortstop, third base, and center field. When asked who has been the most influential player for him on the Angels, Grant said Howie Kendrick. Grant said that Howie has been very open and helpful in getting him ready to work with Erick Aybar and prepared to play within the Angels organization.

Last season, Angels fans only got a limited exposure to Grant Green as a player. This year, fans will get to see a lot more of him. And, my bet is that he will become a crowd favorite.

Lolz, Greenland would be a good one but until he forces the issue Kendrick is going to be the starting 2nd baseman. Nice to read Grich is working with him. Maybe Bobby can unlock what is holding Grant back from being a quality starter.

nice job Dave.

so serious looking on the field, but seems like a very personable dude.

His is pretty though.

Kinda looks like Lackey if John had that chromosome he seems to be missing.

Lackey has a chromosome, unfortunately it's a horse chromosone.

Seems like a pretty cool guy. I have to wonder what the Angels have planned. I would assume either he or Howie will be playing for someone else before the season is over. Especially since the second coming of Cano will be in AAA.

I think Green does have a nice role for the Halos, if he can work on his defense so that he's at least passable at second, third, and maybe the corner outfield spots, he could become a very good guy to have play against some lefties with Hamilton, Calhoun, and Ibanez all in the lineup.

Can Green become the DH vs lefties? Given Ibanez' age, he likely needs to be limited to about 120 starts.

That's what I think might be the plan, Green's gotta make the roster first though. We have Stewart and McDonald who are in camp to create some competition for Green and Romine, time to show us what you're made of.

Hope they do. Both Green and Romine were hitting well towards the tail end of last year
