Angels sign Mark Mulder to minor league deal

I talked to Mulder tonight and he said the injuries weren't really why he retired, not directly anyway. He said his mechanics got so out of whack from pitching around the injuries that he couldn't be effective. Now he believes he's solved that problem.

Whether he can be effective remains to be seen, but I think it will be a performance issue, not a Madson-like endless rehab issue, which is what you could have with Santana.

This is more comparable to the Chad Cordero story. He never made it because the stuff didn't come back, but cost the Angels nothing more than a minor league salary to let him find out.

Ironically, that no-hitter might have been the final straw.

Leave it to Terry "The Butcher" Collins to leave a guy who has missed the previous year with a shoulder injury to throw 134 pitches in a game he was leading 5-0 in the 6th inning.  Santana had a 2.38 ERA at that point.  He was then made to throw 1018 pitches over 58 innings while pitching to the tune of a 6.98 ERA (Including his complete game no-no).  Didn't matter that he was getting pummeled, Collins saw no reason why he couldn't rack up pitch counts -- shades of Dickson, Hill and every other fried arm in Terry Collins history.

There isn't an arm that Terry Collins isn't willing to sacrifice for his own personal gain.

There's always the option of him coming out of the bullpen to replace Gubicza in the broadcaster's booth too.

Jerry Dipoto is serious about building depth throughout the entire organization. An acquisition is coming soon to back up Chuck. The Spring Training competition at FanFest should be fun to watch.  :P

A rival scout who saw Mulder said “it would be surprise me” if the lefty failed to contribute to #Angels…

…Scout said Mulder threw 87-92 mph with good sink and good change. Added that lefty is in great shape and at 36 remains a terrific athlete.

This could turn out to be a good signing. He may be 36, but he doesn't have the miles a 36 year old has. His should has had more than enough time to heal, it's just a matter of how good he can still throw. With Tanaka or Garza as a 3, Mulder as a 4, and Richards as a 5, this rotation could be a nice strength next year.

This scout apparently doesn't want his name and reputation tied to this report.
