Nile and Immolation, for two. Emperor and Drudkh, for two more. I like most of the subgenres as well, particularly melodic death metal.

 

Very nice, Drudkh is awesome.

 

And Nate, Blind Guardian does kick quite a bit of ass. My favorite album is probably Somewhere Far Beyond. I'm not a big power metal fan, but I love the Bards!

Black album was good.  Their style changed starting with the self titled album but still was good.  S & M is a masterpiece IMO.  Best combo of rock and symphony I have ever heard.

 

Load is good too.  2x4 and Aint My Bitch are good.  Lyrics wise the songs were pretty poor, lot of stupid lines, but still good metal.  It was the beginning of the end of Metallica though.

Also, did any band fall off a cliff worse than Megadeth?  After Cryptic Writings they made such bad and uninspired music.  Breadline was ok on Risk but everything else was unlistenable IMO.

I suppose I should go back and listen.  "The World Needs A Hero" was so bad I couldn't stand to listen to anything else they came out with.

 

Then again I never listened to any of the stuff Metallica released after Load either.

Metallica was put in a tough spot but I would have liked it if they stuck to their guns the way Pantera and Iron Maiden did after the Nirvana effect. They would have sold less records for sure but they likely would have put out better music. You almost can't blame them though for trying to conform.

Lars killed that band.

 

Metallica would have made money regardless.  Going more Grunge/Alternative did nothing for them.  They were one of the biggest bands in the world.  I hate this statement, but in their case it is true, they sold out.

 

One of their biggest problems is that Hettfield was a raging alcoholic and was unreliable.  Lars took over and the rest is history.

Lars is a terrible drummer too. It is hilarious to watch the Big 4 shows and compare him to Dave Lombardo and Charlie Benante. They're so much better than him it is unbelievable. I saw a video of Charlie Benante playing Helpless with Hetfield, Kirk, and Trujillo backstage before a show. Really proves that the reason they sound so crappy live is because of how incompetent Lars is.

It got them more airplay on the radio and on MTV. Had they stuck to their roots, they wouldn't have gotten as much exposure. But I agree with what I think you're saying. It didn't do much for their legacy.

I have never heard of most of these sub genres so you will have to mock yourselves. I do agree though Taylor swift has chops. When she has some real life experiences she is going to do some amazing work. And whoever mentioned Lyle Lovett is spot on. His album Pontiac is definitely a top ten for me.

The first two that come to mind for me are Disturbed and Avenged Sevenfold.  I don't think they are the greatest bands but I still really enjoy listening to their music.

I am a huge Avenged fan and have not been mocked yet. I think they may try a little too hard on the image thing but there music is pretty good. I have been called out for listening to Josh Groban though.
