Get ready to keep hearing about we are in a drought and to keep cutting back, even though we are above average rainfall.

Rain impact on California's mega reservoirs

one of the new things we learned/heard a few years ago was that the amount of rainfall we get isn't all that significant towards easing the drought and making sure we all have enough water. it really pivots on how much snow is dumped on the sierra nevadas.

i imagine the rainfall would play a bigger role if somebody somewhere had enough foresight to try and capture the rain instead of letting it all run into our drain pipes and get flushed out to sea.

So are you saying that the LA river being all concrete wasn't a good idea?

i'm 50-50 on this.

on the one hand it's been good for giving people a place to get stuck driving during storms. on the other hand, it's been a good place to grow trees and give people a place dump old sofas and chevys.

For fuck sake meteorologists.  Why must you give everything some stupid catch phrase?  So let me get this straight….Southern California is going to get hit by a “life threatening, bomb cyclone being pushed by an atmospheric river?”

Good lord.  Can we just go back to calling it a major rainstorm and not try to scare the shit out of all the sheeple in So Cal?

Stay safe up there.  Don't be a hero like Reimer, or go driving a snowmobile like Block.  Do take pictures though.  I'm sure it's going to be gorgeous up in Big Bear.

I will @gotbeer.  If snowblowing my driveway makes me a hero, I’m Superman.  Not Jeremy Renner, though.

Bomb cycle is the type of storm it is not a catchphrase. That's like saying why call it a tornado instead of just a really windy day?

So you’re saying I shouldn’t be BBQ’ing right now?  It just seems like a regular winter day in the mountains.

I liked it back in the day when it was called a Pineapple Express.

But I can see the term bomb cyclone. Winds out there near the center we're clocked at 111 mph earlier today.

Bay area is getting hammered again, the Eureka area too. SoCal will get the heavy rains around midnight, for six straight hours. Stay safe!

I totally get it.  I just find the naming of this stuff a tad over the top.  I’m with you, Pineapple Express was just not catchy enough.

What they had in Buffalo, NY ( my dads home town) was a killer storm.  This ain’t Buffalo.

Never said anything like that. I just have no problem with meteorologists educating people on different types of storm systems. You're a firefighter, I'm guessing there is a little more nuance between big fire, little fire.

You’re right @St1ck.  Maybe I just think that naming weather systems like that is a bit much.  Especially in this day and age of media.  Firestorm, Bomb Cyclone, etc.  it’s a bit much.

Even the residents up here are concerned because of the build up, even though we’ve been through many major winter events through the years.

I just get a tad tired of media, I suppose

Again I'll circle back to your profession, there's nothing wrong with informing people what they can possibly expect so they can prepare. I'm assuming when you have to deal with brush fires that wind patterns are something you factor in when warning people to evacuate. I understand the media can get into storm porn sometimes but I would take that over the alternative of just down playing significant incidents and then having people like yourself that are on the front line having to risk your lives trying to save people that think "ahh it's just a minor bit of rain/snow that will just blow over."

Slight change of subject but I'm curious on what your opinion is as a firefighter to what I feel is a way too laxed zoning laws of where houses can be built. In a state that is constantly dealing with brush fires I still see new houses being built in areas that are basically guaranteed to eventually have a fire rolling up a hill toward them.

One word @St1ck, money.  In California, zones are set up in 3 ways, at least as it pertains to firefighting.  FRA, SRA and LRA.  FRA is Federal Regulated Area which is protected by the US Forest Service and they have jurisdiction.  That is mostly your rural areas, but they have jurisdiction on what can be built.

SRA is regulated by CalFire (old CDF) and they have jurisdiction.  Again, any building is done under their jurisdiction.  That is mostly up north, where CalFire is the main fire protection, or locally like, Riverside County and the southern areas.

LRA is Local Regulated Areas which includes LA County, San Bernardino County, Orange County, Ventura County,  etc.  These jurisdictions have control over what can be built.

Bottom line is Fire Departments have very little input to what, and cannot, be built in the urban interface.  Money drives the need, not safety.  That’s why it will only get worse as drought and building gets more pushed into very high and extreme fire zones.

It explains why people can’t get fire insurance in cities like Big Bear, and other mountainous areas, because insurance companies are over the payouts year after year.

I hope that kind of explains it in a round about way

It does and thanks for your response. I work in insurance and I think it is insane whenever I see a new community being built up in some of these areas. I would hope that we would learn a lesson when we see what happens to places like Paradise but I suppose you're right, money overrules common sense and people like yourself have to clean up the mess.

Anyway I respect and appreciate what you and your fellow firefighters do. If we ever happen to meet up all beers are on me.
