Angels release Ryan Madson

The ball was coming out of his hand well during those long toss sessions. My favorite Ryan Madson memory was that time he put on his jersey and took team pics during ST

I forwarded those tweets to my brother the first three times followed with the usual "this will be huge!!!!".  By early June the tweets become a running joke between us.  We knew he was not coming back.

Signing Madson was a good bet. I liked the decision process that lead to the signing.

Yes, it did not work. However, it made sense at the time risk/reward wise.

To the best of my knowledge Arte still self-insures MLB contracts.

It was dumb, there was no guarantee he could pitch this season.

Better off signing krod for 500k.

The Angels had huge bullpen issues going in to this year. The club signed two guys coming off arm injuries to help address those problems. One pitched a handful of games and the other saved a game in A ball. Going in to next year the Angels will still need to address huge bullpen issues.

Two years in a row this front office has failed to address the bullpen. If I'm an impending free agent reliever I'm licking my chops waiting for the Halos to call.

Obviously it is easy to criticize the Madson signing now. Considering how overpaid Closers (with a capital C) are paid by the market I would rather the club explore deals such as Madson.

If Arte doesn't chase another 32+ former MVP candidate perhaps we could explore options that do not entail as much risk.

"Our medical team has spent much time, effort and resources in the effort to facilitate a healthy return... This was an upside gamble that I deemed worth the risk, and unfortunately it did not transpire for either Ryan or the club."

I think that about sums it up.

I laugh when people say signing him was a good bet.

He wasn't capable of performing at any level when they signed him -- yet they gave him $3.5 million anyway.  This is like your boss needing an accountant, so he visits the local ICU and finds somebody who can't talk, move their limbs, or open their eyes, and gives them a $200,000 job to manage the company finances.

This is Dipoto's worst move IMHO.
