How about, no.

I want someone with experience, but Ebel is a long time highly respected coach waiting for his shot. I would rather have him than Benji Gil or Ray Montgomery for instance.

Okay, in that case, still no. Matching Ebell up with other guys I don't want as manager doesn't polish his star.

How does one determine what makes a good manager?

It's obviously hard to do for the Angels. They've had two dozen managers in 60 plus seasons, and only three or four good ones.

For new managers, you'd have to look at their interview, and demeanor, and coaching experience. For veteran managers, results matter, but sometimes you look at the circumstances where they had their first shot and see why it didn't work.

Brandon Hyde had a winning percentage of .391 the past 4 years, then it’s .623 this year. Did he all of a sudden get that much better?

The manager is going to be close to irrelevant.

Celebrity managers are a thing of the past. Nowadays the GM wants to run the show with analytics etc. and the field manager has to be willing to accept that.

If you think this is anything other than player development and good coaching....

If you really think the Manager is irrelevant, then why did Philly have success under their new manager and not under Girardi?

No, but he was handpicked by Elias and as the talent Elias acquired was brought up, Hyde has clearly maximized it and turned it into winning.  We have to hope for something similar with Perry's guy

Coincidence. Girardi also only managed 51 games with the Phillies last year. Most teams will have a stretch of 51 mediocre games over 162 games

How? Giving locker room pep talks?
