To get a superstar FA it usually requires eating the backend of the contract as the standard now seems to be 10 year contracts for early 30's FAs.

Any GM who gives a ten year contract to a player in his early 30s is insane. You are guaranteed to kill your team's chances of winning for the last 4-5 years of the deal (unless you're the Dodgers or the Yankees with unlimited money).

We know this all too well.

He's 31 after this year.  He's walking away from 4 more years at $30 million.  So safe to say he's looking for a longer contract.  He's in his prime now, but the backend will be brutal.

No thanks.  Can’t stand that dude.  His attitude stinks and think of the heat Garret Anderson took, Fanny Fachado would be worse.

Focus on getting Ohtani as an Angel for life

That reputation could be valid in his early days but not since he moved to SD.

12:29pm: A source tells MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes that the report of Machado seeking a 10-year, $400 million extension is incorrect.  It is not known specifically what Machado is seeking, or whether his camp made a counteroffer to the Padres’ offer to add five years and $105MM to his existing contract.

Trout is also going to be 31 after this year.  And his health is already a downhill spiral.

So having two players, who will probably be Pujolesque at the same time, eatting a huge amount of your salary, looks like a win now gamble (except for the Angels aren't winning) and paying for it in the future.

3 players.  Unfortunately, we have to include Rendon in the "Pujolesque" scenario.

He would be walking away from 5/$162 M.

I doubt he would get 10/$400 M. but I do think he would be able to re-enter the market and get more than 5/$162 M - maybe 7/$259.

This could also be nothing more than Machado getting it out there to help negotiate an extension with the Padres.

Machado only needs to beat $150m/5y. He got a $20m signing bonus his first year which is amortized over the life of the contract for accounting purposes. He’s the same age as Bogaerts and the better player so I can’t see him signing for less than him.

He prob saw Judge at the same age get a rumored $400m from the padres so he thought as the franchise player he should get as much. He will prob get a ~$325m offer from someone though if he waits.

The Ohtani signing is going to fall under this

Does anyone really know how long Ohtani wants to continue his career? Maybe he just wants to achieve goals and a specific time frame isn't necessary.

Everyone else wants these long term contracts so it’s safe to assume he wants the same. It’s possible he doesn’t want a long term one though

You would have to think at least long enough to be the second Japanese player to make the HOF.  For as amazing as he's been.  He only has 2 full seasons under his belt.  Longevity is a big part of being a HOFer.
