Trout, Ohtani, and... Machado?

Machado announced he will opt out of his contract with the Padres after the season. Imagine if the Angels sign him next offseason because we'll still need a SS because they didn't sign one this offseason. Or Rendon could shift to 2B/1B and Machado could play 3B.

Perhaps Ohtani would be more likely to stay if they sign Machado? Does Arte, since he decided to retain ownership of the team, wanna make a real big splash or stay mediocre? If Ohtani leaves regardless then signing Machado would at least ease that pain.

What do you guys think? Go all in for Manny Machado?

That depends upon what "all in" means. If it's a ten year contract, no. I can understand why Moreno might be a bit gun shy about long term contracts after the Pujols deal.

Neto is just a year away from taking over at SS.

Focus on re-signing Ohtani and Renfroe.

He's 31 after this year.  He's walking away from 4 more years at $30 million.  So safe to say he's looking for a longer contract.  He's in his prime now, but the backend will be brutal.  

Trout is also going to be 31 after this year.  And his health is already a downhill spiral.  

So having two players, who will probably be Pujolesque at the same time, eatting a huge amount of your salary, looks like a win now gamble (except for the Angels aren't winning) and paying for it in the future.

The Pujols comparisons are so cringe. Pujols was already showing decline in his last season with the Cards before he signed here. To get a superstar FA it usually requires eating the backend of the contract as the standard now seems to be 10 year contracts for early 30's FAs.

So many players now make $30M AAV compared to when Machado signed that deal with the Padres. Maybe he's looking for mostly higher AAV.

Machado hasn't been a full time SS since 2018 but it could work if you keep him at 3B and move Rendon to the right side of the IF.

How about this:

If Ohtani leaves use the payroll space to sign Machado and Urias.

I think SD would not mind him leaving. They would be one of teams going after Ohtani. I would pass on Machado. If Ohtani is not signed Angels will have plenty of money to spend.

Yeah, maybe this is true of all fan bases, but it seems like we have some sort of weird tendency to overvalue our prospects here.

True

Neto is more advanced in more areas than Adell was at a similar age (22).

They don’t need another star, if Ohtani stays.   Just continue going forward to surround Trout and Ohtani with solid players/pitchers like they did this off-season.

Gentlemen, choose. Ohtani or Machado because there is no payroll room for the both of them. Not in any fantasy world where you think the Angels are going over the cap with their broadcast revenue in jeopardy for 8 or more years.

Traded from a team that is likely to be in the playoffs and possibly division winner? Odd even for Machado. It's probably an open invitation for the Padres to renegotiate his contract now.

Better to focus on your own in house FAs, how often have out of house FAs worked for the Halos.

The Angels need payroll space to retain and pick up pitching. Without pitching they won't move anywhere in the standings.

He’s not the player the halos need. He’ll also be very expensive at a time when signing Ohtani is much higher and far more important priority.

It’s hard not to have expectations for high draft choices.  If Neto and Adell are both two win players next year the Angels are in good shape.
