Justin Verlander Seeking Deal Similar To Max Scherzer’s

Well, he basically missed two years (2020-21), so I think you could make an argument that last year was more akin to his age 37 season, not age 39 (meaning, dial back a couple years). Still, do you want to spend $40M a year for anyone's age 38-40 seasons, let alone his 40-42 seasons?

I think he's good for a couple more years, but the drop-off could be fast when it happens.

I would prefer to win than lose.

But I would also prefer to win without Verlander than with Verlander.

The Angels have only one WS ring in over 60 years.  The team doesn’t have a super strong franchise legacy on its own.

So I would prefer the team build its own legacy of winning where the storyline isn’t driven by the team grabbing another franchise’s legend for a year or two.

But at the same time, winning is better than losing.  So this is a circular conversation for me.

Or is it?

I get it.

It's like when the Lakers signed Karl Malone and Gary Peyton.  I thought... WTF?  I can't cheer for those guys.

Like LeBron.

I'm in the same camp. I'm all for bringing in good players. But... it's awkward when it's straight Mercenaries, especially if it's guys you hate.

same here.  hence the reason I made the mercenary comment earlier.  I actually hated the Lakers getting LBJ and I've been laughing ever since.  It's the exact reason I dislike the NBA in general.

I could kinda like with then dropping 40m for a year or two on a guy if that's like the absolute final piece of the puzzle.  The thing that certainly puts them over the edge.  Same thing applies to a big trade.  If you think you're one guy away then go for it.

They're not a Scherzer or Verlander away from winning 95 games.
