Details on why Shohei Ohtani was not traded

Recommended Posts

Ever think Ohtani might have peaked as a two way player already? Especially on the hitting side of the equation.

His hitting this year is quite a bit off last year's pace. Which might have been an outlier. Maybe he's more the hitter he was before last year and is again now. He goes through stretches of being fooled badly and striking out a lot. Everyone notices the home runs. But in between there are unproductive phases. He has a ton of responsibility and pressure as a hitter because no one else in the lineup scares anyone. So that could be a reason for pressing.

As a pitcher he is as good as he ever has been. But he does make mistakes. On a better team those mistakes wouldn't matter as much. But he has to pretty much throw a shutout every time out since there is barely a smidgen of run support. As well, the health of his arm is always a potential risk. Especially thinking long term. There was a minor scare this week. He had a minor groin tweak on the basepaths a couple of weeks before. Who knows how long he can endure two way play and stay healthy?

I really think the team has degraded too much to try and build around him. No matter how good he is they still lose most of the time. And the present  roster and farm system don't look promising enough to turn things around. For the sake of the team they need an infusion up elite prospects. Hitters primarily.

Trout and Rendon will still be here out of necessity. And be the veteran foundation.  By default they should still have a few years at least of decent production  if healthy. Especially Trout. The pitching is starting to come around and look more hopeful. But it's that pathetic batting order and bench. At this point, Rengifo is the only position player who looks halfway competent.
