Gameday Thread: Nationals @ Angels (5/6/22): Diaz on the mound

Recommended Posts

Angels are playing at a high level right now but I think they need another OF. Any injury who do they use? Mayfield, Rojas or Adell. Marsh is great on defense but is striking out at an alarming rate. Red Sox continue to lose JBJ could be available. Diaz looked very good and I like fast pace.

how did Diaz look?

secondary pitches got him out of trouble.  Both the slider and change worked very well.  Fastball command was a bit off but not bad.  He's very poised on the mound.  Doesn't seem like much bothers him.  Got behind on some hitters but didn't give in.

Seattle got incredibly lucky last year getting 90 wins with a -51 run differential. They are getting unlucky this year with a positive run differential; i.e. they were winning close games last year but losing them so far this season. Weird that our first series with them isn't until the middle of June - even stranger is that it is a 5 game series in Seattle.

National's a good hitting team

Actually, 10th in NL OPS at .678 and next to last in NL HRs (17), although third in NL doubles

They have Soto and Bell, and then meh after that.

That said, any MLB game shutout is good.

The key relievers minimize their pitch counts, helping to keep their arms fresher.   Just over 40 pitches to get through 4 innings

20 scoreless innings have now reduced the team ERA to 3.41, 5th lowest in the AL.

Good blend of pitching, hitting, much improved defense, and speed on the bases

Mariners gave up 3 runs in the top of the 9th, and lose to the Rays 7-8. Mariners drop to 12-15.

Also, to make things even worse, their starting catcher Tom Murphy dislocated his left shoulder.
