The Angels aren't going to do that anyway. Presumably, Ward isn't going to be out for long, and I think they would allow Upton to just go find a team he wants to be all season instead of saying "can you play for us for another few weeks and then let us release you?"

Only if they claim him. If he signs with a new team after being waived, then the terms of that contract would apply. However, the amount the Angels owe him would be reduced by whatever that contract is, as he cannot make more than he was guaranteed. The guarantee works two ways.

So one of their top prospects in Marsh becomes a bench player not getting everday AB's AND Adell ends up playing LF where he's looked pretty rough compared to how well he was starting to look in RF
