Underrated Players

Cameron also played in Safeco, which killed his counting stats. If he played in Texas his numbers would have been better (sort of like when Beltre left Safeco).

Mike Cameron's OPS+ for the four years he played for the Mariners are significantly higher than his career average.

Speaking of terrible players. . .
Joe Blanton often gets railed as the worst starter ever in 2013.

Yes he was absolutely brutally bad.

But if we want to be honest, Jim Abbott in 1996 was far worse. 2-18, 7.48 ERA and 1.75 WHIP.

So who legitimately has the crown for worst Angel starter ever in a single season?

Jim Abbott owns that honor, single handedly.

Ken McBride in 1964, probably.  4-13 with a 5.25 ERA (63 ERA+, compared to 66 for Abbott in '96).  -2.3 bWAR, compared to -2.1 bWAR for Abbott (somehow, Fangraphs has Abbott in '96 as just 0.0 WAR...).  McBride led the league in hit batters. Abbott led the league in losses. Both McBride and Abbott walked more guys than they struck out.

Funny I once met McBride and Abbott at the same time and we discussed this very subject.  In the end, we took a vote.  “Raise your right hand if you think the other guy was worse.”

The results were clear.

Was arguing with someone about a particular player, who I was a big fan of, but I think is overrated.

And I started mentioning guys from the past who had far better numbers, but nobody remembers. As Angel fans, Tim Salmon works perfect here. And that recent Abreu thread I think was pretty surprising, and hes a good example.

Anyway, I was looking up guys from the past that nobody remembers, or at least talks about, and one who really surprised me was Shawn Green. I totally forgot he was a pretty decent base stealer too, to go along with his power numbers.

Who you got?

He was highly skilled at using PEDs at the same time as Eric Gagne.

Carl Crawford was on a solid path until injuries derailed him. I would've liked seeing him finish his career as strongly as he started.

I'm good with how he went down hill while wearing a Red Sox and then a Dodger uniform.
