Your question is based on the premise that the underperforming players are kept solely because they have a good clubhouse presence. I think that line of thinking is wrong. Which players would fall into that category?

Suzuki and Guerra, specifically.

The fact that they put Junior Guerra on the IL with a fake injury rather just DFA'ing him last week shows that they've done that.

1. What other catcher do we have that is any good? The other 2 guys who started games behind the plate were Bemboom and Butera.

2. Guerra has a great clubhouse presence? How do you know this?

1. Chad Wallach, who has been a catcher in the majors for multiple years. Have you see Suzuki back there?

2. Joe Maddon has said so. I'll see if I can find an exact quote.

Edit: I looked, but I can't find it. I believe it was in a pre or post game interview. Sorry to not be able to back it up with proof, but I know I heard him say it at some point.

Wallach? He's terrible.

OPS+ this year with Miami of 59.

Caught stealing % of 7.  Yes, seven.

Joe's wrong about a lot of things.  This isn't one of them.

Our offense, if healthy, is fine.  Our defense, by individual abilities, is fine (pull your head out, Joe).

A rotation that "counts on" Suarez, Canning, Detmers, C-Rod, Barria, etc. is not going to put on par with the elite.  It's that simple.  We need more MLB proven arms in both the rotation and the BP if we want to compete for a championship.

Did you or anyone else ask or did he elaborate on who if anyone on the staff he believes fits his view of being ready to win right now?   What if anything does he attribute the defensive struggles to?

No. I don't believe he'd answer that on the record anyway.

But I am pretty sure that he views Ohtani and Sandoval as guys who could be in a rotation of a good team, and then maybe Suarez if he's at the end. Everyone else is a wait and see.

Asking questions that get Maddon and/or others in leadership roles to explain why they think the Angels are in the situation they're in right now, why the team has had long-term struggles to get back on the path to success, etc.

Minasian and Maddon have not been here for long enough to answer that question.

We asked Carpino last year after he fired Eppler and he gave a pretty vague answer along the lines of "we must be doing something wrong and we need to figure it out."
