The US' involvement in Afghanistan epitomizes what's wrong with how our country or rather our elected officials have "tried to bring democracy" to some parts of the world.  It also shows why when we give money to parts of the Middle East, South and Central America, etc. those areas remain in the same shape because it doesn't go to the people it's supposed to help while those in power reap the benefits.  Unfortunately nothing will be learned from this and we'll go on wasting lives and money while making new enemies all in the name of "democracy."

They aren’t trying to bring democracy anywhere.  They don’t give a fuck about any of that bullshit.  That’s the bill of goods they sell you.  The money goes to exactly the right people.  They want to do war and they want to extract resources.  That’s it.

been watching BBC coverage this morning. one person said that the taliban is good at making war, but we don't know how well they can govern. it's a very valid concern since they now have power.

a huge concern is what will happen to the women in the country. they had been allowed to have jobs, work in gov't, and get an education, all things these bass-ackward extremists decry. a taliban spokesman said many of them will be allowed to continue doing these things. i have almost zero confidence that this will happen, but we'll see. women will also be required to cover up again, though it's unclear to what degree.

we should continue any and all humanitarian efforts we can safely involved in. outside of that, it's time to let the afghanis take care of their own country - 40 years of war hasn't improved anything there.

This is, quite literally, the only positive thing I’d be able to say about Trump. And I think it had a positive strategic benefit with regard to certain foreign relations issues.

It’s absolutely terrible, women are the true victims here. But maybe their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons should have done more to prevent the Taliban takeover.
