I thought the batter has to swing at a dropped third strike to have the chance to get to first.

A better way to think about it is a batter has three chances to put a ball in play... If a third strike is called (via swing or ball in the zone) the ball is essentially put in play for the batter. So this means that the act of the catcher catching the ball secures the out, just like if the batter had hit the ball in the air. If the ball hits the ground it becomes a force play and the out must be recorded at first.
