Juan Soto has a .471 OBP which, not counting last year, would be the highest OBP since Barry Bonds and the 11th highest since 1970. Ahead of him are:

Bonds x4 (2001-04)

Thomas (1994)

Edgar (1995)

Giambi x2 (2000-01)

Boggs (1988)

Olerud (1993)

Meaning, all roid era except for Boggs.

I have been buying up Juan Soto rookie cards.

I’ve just been assuming the AL east would get the two wild card spots but somehow the Mariners are .5 games out in the last week of September

Didn’t someone say they weren’t getting into the WC game?

Red Sux have lost 4 straight.

Jays still have to play the red hot Skanks twice more.

M’s host the slumping A’th once more, and then host the tanking Halos for 3 games.

Imagine how much better he’d be if he didn’t do the home run derby and tank in the second half.

Without doing any research I think Ohtani is the only HR Derby participant that had a significant drop off in production in the second half.

We can put that myth to rest

Seems like other factors are involved.

First off....  there was no way he was gonna stay that hot

Can we pull a rabbit out of a hat and knock them out of the postseason?

Hoping for a miracle but not expecting anything.

Pretty sure Gallo fell off a cliff, Mancini and Story kinda tanked too.

Using third grade logic and looking at raw OPS splits (not taking into account quality of pitching or park factors, I’m not a nerd and don’t know how to look that up for first and second half splits), Ohtani, Gallo, and Mancini are the ones who had a noticeable drop off after the derby, Olson to a lesser degree.

Ohtani - 1.062 OPS in the first half vs .822 OPS in the second

Mancini - .791 vs .720

Gallo - .923 vs .673

Olson - .938 vs .898

Story - .765 vs .839

Soto - .851 vs 1.204 (ridiculous)

Alonso - .802 vs .894

Perez - .802 vs .951

Honestly, I'd argue it's just Ohtani and Gallo.  Olson's drop-off wasn't that big.

I think Story had that awful stretch in July after the break and before the deadline.

An impressive level of stupid.

Baseball injuries are sometimes the dumbest ones of any sport. Remember Chris Coghlan, who tore up his knee in 2010 trying to deliver a shaving cream pie to a teammate's face after a walk-off win? After the surgery etc he made a comeback, but his numbers never matched his Rookie of the Year performance in 2009. He retired at age 32.
