That one is kind of a unique circumstance, though.  Wainwright is beloved by Cardinals fans and he's still pitching well even though he just turned 40.  Next year will probably be his last season, so I kind of get it.  I personally don't think other pitchers will be able to use his deal as a very strong comp.

That's fine, but it still seems entirely unjustified to give him that much money, given his performance and how much control they already had on him.  Hey, it's their money, so go for it, I guess--but just seems really silly.
