Maddon is not a terrible manager.  It is not his fault that we can't find one or two starters that are capable of pitching deep into a game.

Pena was the hot hand at the time and it was too early in the game to use bedrock, but Bedrosian is the vet and should be trusted in key spots if the manager is having second thoughts.  The hot hand isn't always the best hand.

Maddon isn't a bad manager. He's a manager, one with tons of experience. 

Scioscia - Great at clubhouse culture, gave his starters the hook two batters too late, mediocre at bullpen management, and not an outside the box thinker at all. Not willing to invest in alternative methods. Strictly traditional.

End Result: Flawed but decent manager. Builds a strong team, but can be outmaneuvered by other organizations. 

Ausmus - Terrible at clubhouse culture, quick hook on his starters, never let them battle, pretty solid bullpen management, very analytically inclined, predictable.

End Result: So-so manager. Not much of a team builder. Cold, hard and calculating. But also won't cost you the game with his decisions.

Maddon - Great clubhouse manager. Solid with his starting pitchers but terrible bullpen management. Always willing to time and try different methods.

End Result: Decent, yet flawed manager. The longer he stays, the more the players love him. Insanely good team builder and very flexible, which results in culture and wins. Sometimes his decisions backfire though, and can cost you a win too.
