A 1.31 WHIP is alright for paying a guy $5-$7 million/year for.   But not almost triple that.   And certainly not when the WHIP is 1.25 since 2016.

Please list the 200 inning 1.25 whip starters available for $5m.

I get your point but you are not being realistic in the market.

here's another way to frame it.  Would you trade Jeremiah Jackson and two solid international prospects just starting out for a solid pitcher entering his 31yo season and 4/75 left on his contract?  3/55?

do you think he'll have a sub 4 era season ever again?  I don't.  He doesn't move the needle enough for this year or next to take away the financial flexibility for not only those two years but the one or two after that when he's 33/34 and potentially a back end starter.

like others have said.  There's a reason why he's still a free agent and it's got everything to do with what teams think he's worth vs. what he thinks he's worth.  I wouldn't even meet in the middle on that.

I fully understand.  Except I also think his market is dwindling and what he ends up signing for just might be low enough to consider.

Dude should be good for about 190 innings and 17 to 20 quality starts each of the next few seasons.  Trading for a player like that would cost more than a couple of top prospects.

If not Keuchel then who?  Y'all want to go after 37 year old Verlander next season?

I think that is the issue....everybody trashes Keuchel, and he certainly has flaws, but nobody has any other bright ideas.....Cahill and Harvey? Meh.....

Nothing is in a vacuum.  I personally will take Cahill, Harvey, a 2nd round pick and International Bonus slot money and the ability to dip back into free agency next season than to sign Keuchel.  I can’t imagine anyone with patience feeling any different.

It isn’t in a vacuum for sure....would you give up a 2nd round pick and international money for two solid years of Keuchel?

No.  Because what is two solid years of Keuchel?  He had the 5th worst hits per 9 last year.  Sure he threw a lot of innings, and there is value there.  But do you keep a guy in the game when he is constantly giving up base runners if it is a close game?  Our offense isn’t on the same level as Houstons last year.

Do you think Keuchel will be as good as he was last year this year and next?  His FIP was worse than Skaggs.

you need to add in the tens of millions of dollars required to pay Keuchel for his services.

True....but, other than Canning and Suarez, we’re not overloaded with SP prospects who will be ready in the next couple of years....and we’ll need to look at FA starters and spending next year...is Keuchel a better bet than what we could do next year?  I dunno...I’m just not sure if he may be a better bet, if the price is right...it’s a value judgment Eppler has to make..

I don’t know...I’d certainly take 2017 for two years, which probably isn’t realistic...

I haven't seen anyone here advocate signing Verlander.

How about Cole, Sale, Waca, etc ?

There are a hundred good points on Keuchel that conclude he isn't great, isn't dominant, and gives up many hits.

And yet exactly as he is, his value to THIS starting rotation would be huge.

He isn't getting the contract he or his agent thought he would get.  I don't know what he will get.  We will see.  But if I were Eppler I would be paying attention and ready if the price drifting into a territory that matched his value to this rotation.
