Trout project done. Now do you sign Keuchel?

I haven't seen anyone here advocate signing Verlander.

How about Cole, Sale, Waca, etc ?

Keuchel is available now.  And signing Keuchel to a 2-3 year deal shouldn't keep us from making a run at any of those guys.  We have a bunch of dudes on one year contracts.

we can say that it shouldn't but I know that it would based on prior patterns.  We're gonna have additional needs beyond two starters.

they can't approach free agents like it's 2 am and the bar is about to close.

Certainly the price has to be right.  This is all under the assumption that he is not getting a super huge deal some thought he would sign for.  But Keuchel on a reasonable contract feels like a good investment to me.

It's pretty crazy that he is still a free agent.

Keuchel is the poster child for the kind of guy Boras would’ve gotten a lot of money for in the past, but front offices no longer fall for his song and dance any more.

Could Keuchel be worth it on a four year deal? Sure, he could. The risk is substantially higher than anyone wants to go for, though.

But you can hang around and see who approaches you.

You do not lose a draft pick if you sign him after the draft!

I gotta assume the Angels are kind of punting on 2019 and looking to begin competing in 2020. Maybe they don't want to sign Keuchel now because they'd rather use the money toward a Cole or Verlander next offseason.

100% this.

This season they’re hoping that some of these one year deals work out and they can sneak in as a second wild card which is very much still up for grabs.

Next year is when we start competing for the division.

No it’s not 100% that.  It’s probably 50% that and 50% not wanting to lose a 2nd round pick as well as International money which is essentially more important prospects.  They aren’t punting, they’re strategizing their path.  If they are in contention at the deadline they will add.

So much more is now known and settled.

Does finishing the Trout project change anything at all in terms of considering somebody like Keuchel?

Based upon Eppler said during Chalk Talk with season ticket holders, Billy's not interested.

Can we compete for the first wild card??

Absolutely. The Yankees and Red Sox both look good, and they have some weak teams in that division, but the AL West will be a lot closer than it has been in the last two years.

Remember, the A's were picked to win 74 and won 97 games in 2018.

Kidding aside, I feel like Trout signing is actually more of a reason to NOT sign Keuchel. We don't need to force or prove anything this year and mortgage some of the future in doing so- we already resolved what would be the reason for maybe bringing him in: trying to be competitive enough for Trout to believe he should re-sign.
