Friends, it’s over. Bryce Harper has blessed the Phillies

Given Harper's injury history at only 26, it's hard for me to imagine he will still be playing baseball at a high level at 36, let alone at 39. This is a good deal for Harper. I predict he will have more of a Josh Hamilton-esque injury based exit from baseball (minus the cocaine) around 35 or so.

"And because the deal's average annual value is $25.4 million, it gets flexibility to spend more in coming offseasons and not run the risk of exceeding the luxury-tax threshold. In other words: Yes, an outfield with Harper and Philadelphia-area native Mike Trout is realistic." -Passan (ESPN)

If true, that's just plain insane.

He will be 72 years old when he gets his last check from the Mets.

From 1992 to 1994, Bonilla was the highest-paid player in the league, earning more than $6 million per year. Since 2009, Bonilla has been paid approximately $1.19 million by the New York Mets each year. The 25 payments come every July 1, which some fans refer to as "Bobby Bonilla Day".[2][3] This was part of a deal made when the Mets released Bonilla before the 2000 season while still owing him $5.9 million for the final year of his contract. The deal expires in 2035, at which point Bonilla will have been paid $29.8 million for a season in which he did not even play for the Mets.{/quote]

Of course he is an upgrade, he only has to be better than our worst starter to be an upgrade.  The question is, is the upgrade worth the cost plus the loss of a draft pick, so far that answer is no.

In that case $330M/10yrs would have been a better deal... If he was injured and couldn't play at a high level at 36 as you suggest he would already have been paid the entire $330M and wouldn't need to stick around for the next 3 yrs.

No way Harper is going to be worth it, no way Machado is going to be worth it. Harper at least tries, Machado is not going to do anything but get hurt then get paid to sit on the bench.

These stupid teams paying these players absurd money is mind-numbing. I don't know why they just don't tell them to f**k off, because they're not that good. If I knew I could have a career batting average of .280 and get paid $30 Mill a year, I would have tried a lot harder to be a ballplayer. But being a previous ballplayer, this garbage is just unacceptable. I don't know why the MLB teams are feeding into this crap.

Machado lifetime:

.282 BA *yawn*

WAR: 33.8 --- Trout does this in 3 seasons in what it took him 7 years to do *bagh*

Harper lifetime:

.279 *burp*

WAR: 27.4 -- Trout beats him in 3 years again in his 7 years in the leagues.

Absolutely absurd.
