OC Register: Angels Notes: Yunel Escobar suffers another setback

SEATTLE — Yunel Escobar isn’t going to be back that soon after all.

The Angels third baseman has had a second setback in the last two weeks in his rehab from a strained oblique, delaying his return and the accompanying lineup dilemma.

Manager Mike Scioscia said Escobar felt the same type of discomfort on Wednesday that he felt during the second game of his rehab assignment a week earlier.

Escobar was shut down, and he was not with the team in Seattle. Scioscia said he’s still expecting to get Escobar back at some time this season. Escobar has been out since Aug. 8.

The Angels have no interest in rushing Escobar back because his absence has allowed two of the team’s hottest hitters, Luis Valbuena and C.J. Cron, to both play. If Escobar were the everyday third baseman — as Scioscia said he will be when he returns — there would be room for only Valbuena or Cron.

ESCAPE ARTIST

Noé Ramirez, who the Angels claimed on waivers last month, inherited eight baserunners in his first four games with his new club, including twice entering with the bases loaded.

He stranded seven of the eight. Overall, Ramirez has retired 10 of the first 11 hitters he faced, with four strikeouts.

“He just comes in and makes pitches,” Scioscia said. “He’s gotten some big innings under his belt for us. He’s one of the guys that hopefully will add depth to our pen and continue to do some of the things that he’s capable of.”

Ramirez, 27, is a product of Alhambra High and Cal State Fullerton.
