[Second Base]

This prospect won't be in our top 30 this season, but the Angels signed a 16 year old kid named Raider Uceta out of Florida for half a million (born in the D.R., so qualifies as an international prospect).

Terrible runner, not much of an arm, and profiles poorly in RF. But built like a linebacker or defensive end and has serious pull power. By the time he's in his early 20's, this kid could have a game changing bat.

so wait does that mean,of the 1.3mil we have in intl bonus, we've spend 500K on this kid? leaving us with 900K. So, no Ohtani than?

No Uceta signed on July 2nd, but largely became a footnote because of the bigger splashes we made in the Bahamas. 

Also Uceta himself is part of a growing trend. Kids that are born elsewhere, but are raised and live here stateside. After their freshman or sophomore year of high school, they go to live with a handler in their country of origin who works one on one with the kid, and schedules different showcases. Once the kid signs a major league deal, this handler gets a portion of their signing bonus.

So while American born ball players must wait until they are 18, their friends here that just happen to have been born elsewhere have the benefit of starting their professional career at 16. 

Its quite unfair.

Infielder who had been putting together some decent production up into A Ball. Not much ceiling or impact but could have grown into future depth/role player type, I felt.

Just had a thought.  We’ve all seen where they look at an NBA draft three years later and then do a “what would the draft look like now”.  So up until recently we were ranked 29-30th.  They should re-rank a farm five years later.  See where they should have been ranked.

And after further review five years later would they still rank them 18th and 19th after seeing how the players in the farm ended up doing?  

We have a narrative here at AW where we all believe (even before Marian and Ohtani) that our farm is a lot better than it gets credit for.  Well it would be great if in the future there was a way to quantify that.

"A system that is firmly in the middle of the pack. A back-of-the-napkin estimate is that they will rank somewhere around right around 15th when our organization talent rankings are put into the 2018 Prospect Handbook"

Little #Angels minor league tidbit. Spoke to someone from outside the organization who is familiar with the Angels system: He likes Jaime Barria better than Jahmai Jones. Says both are major leaguers though.

I think sometimes we forget that these are literally children we are signing.

Maitan trimmed down a bit. Not as slim as he was at 16, but not as chubby as he got last season.
