Interesting. That's one expensive back-up 3B. I always appreciate when decisions like this are made off of on-field play and not ridiculous contracts that should have never been given.

It's refreshing to see a team not care about the money and simply put the best product out there.  If the Angels did this, Weaver or Wilson wouldn't even be talked about as rotation candidates and Albert Pujols would likely carry the same value as an everyday player that Mark Trumbo did.

Agreed...The team is on the hook regardless of where a player plays (field/bench, rotation/pen) or if they are released. Make line-up decisions based on production instead of how much they are being paid.

pablo embarrassed himself last year and I am sure the asked him to get his crap together this off season and come to camp ready to go.  He showed up a fat slob without any clear indication that he worked to get in shape this offseason.  

 

the Angels actually set this precedent by eating the majority of Josh's contract.  

 

Guys with track records who work hard and show up ready to play get the benefit of the doubt.  Maybe that benefit lasts a bit longer than it should, but you can't just pitch guys off to the side.

 

Look at what is happening in Bmore.  They release Miguel Gonzalez to save some cash (which I don't blame them for frankly), but now the clubhouse is pissed.  

 

Wells and Abreu got pitched when Trout came up.  They eventually released Ibanez.  There are a bunch of other examples as well.  

 

Albert does carry that value, but he's still an important part of the offense and you can't trade him so it's moot.  Wilson would be in the rotation if he were healthy, and I think a healthy CJ is a better option than Shoe at this point.  Weaver is the next in line to get the benefit of the doubt for a period of time until the team is forced to do something.  He'll get 3-4 starts too many beyond that though and everyone will lose their shit.

Both Weaver and Wilson (when healthy) are both a better pitcher than Shoemaker. Shoemaker is like forfeiting. We need to score 7 runs a game when he pitches to give us a chance. Plus he gives the bull pen job security.
