He was spot on correct in his own time period. That doesn't make him a racist. That makes the under developed countries defined for what they were. To this day Africa has a problem with education, employment and living conditions that sets it well behind European nations. Even India has similar problems with massive over population with a lack of resources and a class system that still systematically holds sections of their own population down based on birthright. 

This is such narrow minded foolishness of the current time period where people believe current societal expectations should be imposed on previous generations for judgement. Not bothering to use historical facts or context.

Agreed, but the NPR article isn't arguing that he should be less admired because he was racist early in his life. Nor is anyone here.

We need to stop applying 21st century Wokism to prior eras. I mean, the Wokesters don't even like Martin Luther King Jr anymore because he didn't talk about trans people...he wasn't woke enough by the standards of 21st century gender studies undergrads. He believed in true equality and not pointing the finger at any demographic, while the SJW Wokesters have their hierarchy, which goes something like this:

At top: Black transgender and/or gender fluid, non-hetero people with non-binary pronouns and some kind of eating disorder (probably fat) and/or a chronic illness, physical and/or psychological.

At the bottom: Healthy, "cis-gender" heterosexual white males, probably rich and/or Christian and/or not progressive.

Sorry, folks, most of you are on the bottom of the SJW Hierarchy.

^I see it as the Left's answer to the Religious Right. On the Right, you have fundies who believe in Bibllical literalism, on the Left you have the new religion of Wokism, which if you question you are a right-wing homo- and transphobic racist misogynist. Oh yeah, a white supremacist.

I almost believe it is a right-wing conspiracy to invalidate the legitimacy of progressivism. By fusing economic leftism (aka socialism) and wokism (which is cultural and ideological authoritarianism) it makes the whole thing look ridiculous andd turns otherwise reasonable people more towards the right, or at least center.
