Angels out on big LF FA

Recommended Posts

Another platoon in LF again. Maybe 74-75 wins this year?

even worse.  85-87 and 3 games back of the wild card.

75 wins would at least be cause for change.

Only 63 days till we get started on our pursuit of mediocrity while wasting another year of having the best player in baseball.

You know how this is shaping up right? Trout begins to slide. No production around him. He hits .279 with 31 HRs. This next off season will be implosion city.

Seriously these quotes by Arte today just make all of their prior moves even more baffling. Why would they even trade Gott for Escobar? Escobar is the definition of a short-term stop-gap that a contending team could use. Well, doesn't sound like the Angels are looking to contend...unless they think they can BS the fans and say that this is their way of trying to contend

Simmons deal actually makes more sense though after Arte's quotes. Angels didn't need a SS for this year because they had other holes....well, clearly they aren't looking at doing any contending this season so they wanted to get ahead of things and find a long-term SS option for the future.

>deepest FA outfield class in years

>Angels have giant, gaping hole in LF

>not gonna make a single offer to any of them

This is a well run organization.

Not only that.... trading your top prospect for a SS makes is pretty questionable if you aren't going to jump in on a deep free agent outfield market.

Simmons trade makes no sense. You could've traded Newcomb for an impact player...not a ****ing defensive specialist.

Newcomb is going to be making pennies next year as the braves 2nd or 3rd best starter.

The Angels have no farmsystem now. A quick rebuild is all but impossible.

I didn't go into this off season with any expectations so if they don't do anything big from here on out I'm not going to be disappointed or surprised.  I definitely believe Arte wants to win but at the same time it's a business/investment that's been quite good to him and I think from that perspective it will continue to do well next year.  I do agree that if they don't do something to help the offense before the season the Simmons trade is a head scratcher considering they gave up their best trade piece.

Well Calzone hat's off to you, you were right and I was wrong. Although I knew this was a possible outcome and stated that up front I never thought the Angels would piss away even one of Trout's controllable years. This makes the Simmons trade even stranger to me now because he is a win now player added to a borderline win now team. Not continuing the process of adding win now players just marginalizes the team for 2016 if they don't execute any more trades (which will be hard to do anyway without assets to trade).

I am very disappointed that Arte, who ate millions in the Hamilton trade, wasn't willing to eat another $5MM-7MM in 2016 to bring in a win now FA LF.

I don't believe it. It makes no sense whatsoever to not complete your team. Shit the team has so much invested that they're basically pot committed. The luxury tax is basically nothing the first year. You solidify the future of short stop but you have zero trade bait now, so you have to sign a left fielder. WITH Upton or Cespedes we would be in the playoff hunt. Especially with the improved bench depth. Without, we are on the outside looking in unless EVERYTHING goes right.

I don't see why he would say this if it wasn't the truth. It's not a ploy for leverage. If they were serious he wouldn't say anything.

They think they're going to throw shit at the wall all season and get a contending team out of it. I mean, yeah they'll probably finish in 3rd so that's cool.

This FO probably thinks Simmons is an impact player because of his defense. Eppler had a hard-on for SImmons when he was with the Yankees

Angels have one of the bottom 5-10 braintrust/FO in MLB IMO. It sucks, even moreso because of Trout developing into a generational talent. This franchise has never had a player of that caliber and when they finally get one they're blowing it due to very poor decisions by their Owner and FO
